December 8th, 1951. <br /> <br />- NE,~ BUSINESS - <br /> <br /> Bill of J. Shirley Hope, State Gs~e Warden, for $155.00, for destroying tagless <br />dogs, was read, and on motion of Nr. Mayo, the Treasurer was authorized to pay same from <br />funds on h~d from the collection of Dog taxes. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />City Council~ <br />City:of Portsmouth, <br />Municipal Bldg., <br />Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />November <br /> <br />Gentlemen:- <br /> <br /> A r~mor, to the effect that the Honorable City Nanager and certain officials of <br />the Virginia Electric & Power Company have conferred an~dism~ssed the possible removal <br />of certain street car lines ooerating in and about the ~ity, has come to the attention of <br />the Cradock-Norfolk County Chamber of Commerce. <br /> The undersigned has been appointed chairman of a committee to ascertain, ~ong <br />other things, whether or not there is any basis for the above referred to r~or. <br /> We believe that we can safely state that the people of Cradock are well Satis- <br />fied with the service now rendered by the street cars between Portsmouth and Cradoek and <br />are, therefore, not desirous of a change to bus service. <br /> This committee ~espectfullv. re. quests, that it be infor~ed as. _~t~ ~t~..~ ~o~.~ ~ <br />the CoUncil regarding any proposal to d~scontznue the present efficient street car ser- <br />vice to C~adock; and it is fu_rther respectfully requested that the people of Cradock, <br />through the ~radock-Norfolk County Chaucer of Commerce, be allowed the .opportunity of <br />being heard before any deffinite action is taken regarding the removal of its street car <br />service. <br /> Respectfully yours, <br /> <br />0ommittee - <br />G. 0u~tis Hand, Chairman <br />G.L. Ourtis Hand. <br /> <br />On motion of ~Lv;~ Stews~, the letter was referred to the Oity Eanager. <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />November 24, 1931. <br /> <br />Hon. 0ity Oounoil, <br />Per ~mouzt!, Virginia. <br /> <br />Dear Sirs: <br /> I respeotfu!!y re~ae~t that you refund to me the Sum of Twenty-Six Dollars mud <br />Fifty ~ents ($26.50) paid in error on my taxes on property ~!4 Lincoln Street. It seems <br />that my lot was assessed by the assessors for Five-H-mu~ed and Fifty ($550,O0) Dollars and <br />my building f~r. One Thousand ($1000.00) Dollars, making a total of Fifteen Hundred and <br />Fifty ($1550~oO) Dollars. The lot was placed on the land book at Fifteen Hued. red and <br />ty ($1550.00) Deniers_ instead~ of Five Hundred and Fifty ($'D50.~00) Dollars and t~ea .... <br />erased the book returned to the O!erk of the Court's office but ~aited to erase the one <br />returned to the Commissioner of the Revenue. The Commissioner of the Revenue, t' ' '~ <br /> n~n~_ng <br />~2n error had been mmade in the addition, changed the total figure to Twenty-Six Hundred and <br />Fifty ($2650.00) Dollars. In order to avoid any penalties or a delay in the City's colle¢8- <br />ing taxes, I oaid the whole amount charged against me, which was Twenty-Six Dollars and Fif- <br />t~ Cents ($2~.50) more than i should have paid. <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />John T. City Council, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />the Oity Attorney. <br /> <br /> "Portsmouth, VA. <br /> <br />Nov. 27th, 1931. <br /> <br />Gentlemeh: <br /> <br /> In December, 1930, I demolished the buiidi.~g which was numbered 1324 Prentis <br />Avenue° I seeumed $ permit ~rom~ - the Buz_~ng'] ~' Inspector of the City for this purpose and <br />expected the building to be omitted from the tax books in 1931. I find that this was not <br />done, and I am still &ssessed for taxes on the building amounttug to Five Dollars and <br />Thirty Cehts ($5.30).
