Howell a~d the recent statement made through the press by M~vo Hcltzclaw, <br /> President ef the Virginia Electric and Power Cemoany, that his company does not expect to <br /> press M~r.-'Hewell's recommendations regarding rat~S, etc. at this time, the Manager suggested <br /> that the matter be held in abeyance pending f-~ther developments in the matte~. <br /> Motion of Mr. HutchinS to l~Y on table was adopted. - UNFINISHED BUSINESS - <br /> Report of Accounting Department for month of August was received and filed. <br /> - NEW BUSINESS - <br /> <br />The f otlowing letter was read: <br /> <br />"2023 Queen Street,Portsmouth,Va. <br /> <br />0ity Goun¢il, <br />Gentlemen: I~mw~iting you in reference to the household taxes that was written against ms <br />for the year of 1933. We were not ia the City for the 1933 listing and would like to have <br />this charge removed. <br /> Please leek into this as soon as possible and let me hear £rcm you in regards <br />to it. <br /> Thanking you for your trouble in advance, <br /> T.B. Reese." <br /> <br />On motion, the same was referred to the City Attorney. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> ,portsmouth,Va.,September 11, <br /> <br />Honorable ~ity Council, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> ' The City Realty.Gorpo~ation ?wns ~½ feet on the ~orth side of High Street <br /> which property, according to its deed begins l&5 feet west of Seventh Avenue. <br /> In assessi, ng this property the assessors begam the above preper~y 150 feet wes~ <br />of Seventh Avenue, assessing to the property 15 feet of the lot or'Rebecca Abraham. <br /> This error appears to have been caused by only assessing to L.M. Byrd 30 feet <br />instead of 45 feet that he ow~s and occupies, and it is requested that proper corrections be <br />made to your records and that the OityRe$lty Corporation be refunded the money erroneously <br />paid since last asseasment~ <br /> Very sincerely yours, <br /> <br />E.O. FO~, <br />Member of Portsmouth O~ty Oouncil, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />,portsmouth, Va.., <br /> <br />September ?th, 1934. <br /> <br />Dear Sir: <br /> With reference to cur co~ersaticn regarding the country peddlers through the <br />streets of P0rtSmcu~h, I beg ~o state that-the Norfolk Ordinance prohibits all coumt~y carts <br />Or trucks from peddling through the ~ity streets. They are re~ui~ed to go te the City Market <br />and pay tax to'sell their produce which protects the merchant who pays a license te de bus- <br />iness. <br /> If the country trucks or carts are caught violating the Ordinance, a heavy fine <br />is imposed to break up this unfair competition. <br /> Regarding the coal ordinance I am not sure if they recf~ire anyone other thsm re- <br />tail dealers to have scales and pay license to buy carload shipments. <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />VIRGIL D~ PROCTOR, INC. <br /> <br />V.D.
