October 9th, iq~4. <br /> <br /> ' ~' Cast, Parrish, Stewart <br />Ayes:Brooks, Fox, Hutcn~ns, Moore, <br />Nays:~ None~ <br /> <br /> Report o£ the Accounting Department for month of September was received and or- <br />dered filed. <br /> <br />- t~EW BUSIh~SS - <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Va., _October 9th, 1934. <br /> <br />The Honorable City Council, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br /> In ~ay, 1931, the City Realty Corporation transferred to Wit Laderberg real es- <br />tate situated on the North side of King St. and numbered 714 and 716. <br />This property is still listed on the tax books in the name of the City Realty <br />Corporation and taxes on it amounting to $109.18 were paid by the OityRealty 0orpora~ion in <br /> <br /> We.respectfully re~c~uest that the~Oommissioner of Revenue be instructed to make <br />the proper corrections, so that these taxes may be charged to Mr. Laderberg and the Oity Realty <br />0orporation relieved <br /> We'also request that refund of $109.18, erroneously paid by us, be made; receipt <br />for which is held by us. <br /> Very sincerely yours, <br /> <br />E.O. Moore to refer to the Oity A~torne. y, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />To the Honorable City <br />Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />Oounci!, <br /> <br />"PORTSMOUTH, Va., <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> The undersigned humbly petitions your Honorable Body for'relief in payment of <br />water bills at the Oity Jail for the following reasons: That I am a City as well as a ~te <br />official; that the jail is City property; that the City paid for water supply for a number of <br />years until recent months; that the spirit and purpose of the law governing the maintenance <br />of jails is in favor of cities furnishing Water as well as heat and light~; that I am render- <br />ing'services to the City for a nominal sum of Twenty~five Dollars ($25.00) per mo~th, which' <br />does not justly compensate me; that the plumbing equipment for which the Oity is responsible, <br />for repair and maintenance, is in such condition that an unnecessary flow of water oontinu - <br />,ally runs and I am thereby unable to determine what the cost of supplying water will be from <br />month to month and statemehts for the months of August and So, ember, setting forth the var- <br />iance in amounts are hereby attached; that only one sergeant out of eleven cities in this <br />Stat~ pays for water in the jails and the Sheriff of Norfolk Oounty and other Counties ~hzough- <br />out ~e State.does not pay for the water supply. <br /> For the above assigned reasons I trust that you will relieve ms f~om payment of <br />all future water bills. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />R.E. Glover, 0ity Sergeant." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Stewart to refer to the Oity Attorney and that payment of wate~ <br />bill mentioned be held up pending the Attorney's report for 1935 budget, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter from the SChool Board was read: <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Va., October tth, 193~. <br /> <br />Honorable Oity Council, <br /> Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> I ~n directed by the School Board to present to you the School Budget for the <br />year 93D as adopted by the School Board on October 5th, 1934. <br /> This Budget does not provide for the restoration of any part of the out in the <br />teachers~ salaries. Sheet 3 attached shows that the restoration of the 6~ cut will amount to <br />$20,681.66. The Budget also as prepared does no~ provide ~or the restoration of the Night <br />School. Sheet 3 shows the amount necessary to be approximately $1880.O0. <br /> You will note on Sheet 4 that the total Budget for the year is $3403.17 larger <br />th~n for the year 193~, which is accounted for by five ~ajor items listed on that sheet. You <br />will note also that the amount requested from the City ~e $8161.83 less than the amount ap- <br />printed by the City for 1934. This is due to a larger State app=opriation. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />H.A. Hunt, Supt. of Schools." <br /> <br /> <br />
