Crowder." <br /> <br />On motion referred to the 1935-Budget. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />"Norfolk~Va., January 2tst, 1935. <br /> <br />Dr. Vernon Brooks, <br />Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />Dear Dr. Brooks: <br /> We have been in correspondence for some tLme with the former Oity Manager of <br />Portsmouth, regarding extensive reoairs and alterations in the store which we rent from the <br />city at 600 County St. At the tim~ Mr. Anderson left office, this matter was not settled and <br />conseo~ently we are inclosing herewith copies o£ all this correspondence asking that you ren- <br />der us some decision in the matter at your first-opportunity. <br /> It is very necessary that th~se repairs be ~de as soon as possible because if <br />they are not made, it will be necessary that we make an effort zo secure another loca~ on for <br />this store. Wood, General Manager.~ <br /> <br />Motion to refer to the City Manager, with power to act, was adopted. <br /> <br /> The following letter was read: <br /> <br /> ~In regard to the use of the Auditorium, for tonight's anniversary meeting of <br />the Boy Scouts of America I have, in accordance with Mr. Davis' requi=ement, ~eposited with <br />him my check for $15.00 to cover rent for the building. <br /> Due to the fac2 that I~ have to attend the a~miversary meeting, I shall be un- <br />able to attend the Council meeting tonight and will appreciate it if you will arrange that <br />the rent be omitted. <br /> The Boy Scouts is a charitable organization and no admission of any kind is <br />beir~ charged for the meeting. All parents of the Scouts and friends of scouting are invited <br />to attend this meeting. It has been customazy for several years to let the Boy Scouts have <br />the use of the ~uditorium without cha~ge for this annual meeting. <br /> <br />Yours t=uly, <br /> <br />Robert D. Mercers of the City Council, <br />Council Chamber, Mt~0.icipal B~dg <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />,Portsmouth, Va., <br /> <br />February lt, 1935. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> I am attaching hereto receipt showing payment of'$30.00 made by me as General/ <br />Chairman of the Birthday Ball for the president for re~t of the Oity Auditorium on January 30, <br />1935. <br /> As-the proceeds from the ball are to be divided on a basis of 70% to be retained <br />in th~ city for the rehabilitation of the victims of Infantile ~aralysis, Zo be expen~ed under <br />the direction of a committee appointed for that:purpose, and 305 to be forwarded to the National <br />Committee and by them presented to the President for research work in the effort to stamp out <br />this devastating disease, and considering the worthy purpose for which the hall was used, I <br />would respectfully ask that the amount paid by me for rent be refunded. <br /> In order that I may me~e my final returns to the Treasurer of the National <br />mittee for the Birthday Ball for the President, I would appreciate if you. would make the refund <br />available at the earliest oossible moment. <br /> Yours very truly, <br /> <br />Kemp P!u~zmer, General Ohairman, <br />The Birthday Ball for the President." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Fox that a ref. und of $30.00 be made for said purpose, was adopted. <br /> <br /> <br />
