October l~th, <br /> <br /> eA.u advance of $tS.00-was made for the use of the CiSy Auditorium on Sundsy, <br />Sept. 29th, 1935, for theState Convention of the Holy Nsme Society of the Diocese of Rich- <br />mend, embracing this State and part of West Virginia. <br /> No admission charge was made and the object was for the uplift of the commu- <br />nity. <br /> As customary in cases of this kind, will you kin~ly authorize refund? <br /> <br />Yours respectfully, <br /> <br />Geo. W. Ma~oin, President, <br />St. Paul~s Holy Name Society." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Oast to make said refund of ~15.00 was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br /> "Sometime ago your Honorable Body authorized part payment to this writer for <br />services in securing options on certain property for the City. <br /> It is understood this property, with the exception of.two parcels, has now <br />been purchased by the City. As to these two excepted parcels, the City Attorney is informed <br />of the existing situation. The conditions appear of such nature acquisition under the ori- <br />ginal plan of negotiation does not permit of accomplishment. It is believed the purchase, <br />insofar as this writer can participate, has been brought to a conclusion. However, should <br />the occasion later arise and upon request to do so, this writer would lend his further ef - <br />forts in the mat~er without expectation of compensation beyond that already agreed upon. <br /> In the circ~mmstanoe, it is respectfully requested the balance previously <br />withheld by your Body be-now paid. <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />A.J. Phillips, Jr." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Moore to pay Mr. Phillips the balance of ~100.00, due him, was <br />adoptgd, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Brooks, Fox, Hutchins, Moore, Oast, Stewart. <br />Nays: None. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Oast to instruct the City Attorney to condemn the Weiner and <br />Bunting property for municipal stadium, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br /> "St. Joseph"s Al,mnnae Association wish to express their~ sincere appreciation <br />for your efforts in behalf of Medical Inspection for Private schools. <br /> We know you r~alize the necessity of Medical Inspection in all schools, and <br />want you to know that anything you can do for us in regard to this matter will be deeply ap- <br />preciated. <br /> Hopir~ you will decide favorably in this matter. <br /> <br />(Signed) <br /> <br /> Very sincerely, <br /> <br />Mary G. Foster El!er, President. <br /> <br />Catherine O~Brien, <br /> Corresponding Secretary." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br />The following letters--were read: <br /> <br /> "It is respectfully requested that ArmisticeDay, Monday, the llth of Novem- <br /> ber be declared a City Holiday in conformity with the past practice and custom. <br /> In ~ddition to the Military parade, ther~ will be a suitable ceremony in <br /> the Gates ~Theatre at ll A.M., at which ~ime the Honorable John J. Wicker, Jr. will deliver <br />-the main address. <br /> It is hoped you all will accept our most cordial invitation to attend this <br /> simple ceremony and hear this forceful speaker. <br /> <br />Respectfully <br /> <br />W. Ernest Acton, Jr., Chairman, <br />Armistice Day Ceremony Committee.~ <br /> <br /> "Portsmouth Post #37, American Legion, is now formulating plans for the cel- <br />ebration of Armistice Day on November ll~ho It is requested that the usual holiday be declared. <br /> It is requested that you honor us with your presence on the reviewing stand <br />for the parade on that date and also attend the services which follow. <br /> <br />Resp~etfu!ly, <br /> <br />Arthur Emmerson, Chairman, <br /> Parade Committee." <br /> <br /> <br />
