The new motor installed in the old engine will give the Department a spare engine to be used
when other pieces of apparatus are ou~ of contmission for repairs.
Ey opinion, which~is ooncurred in by ~r. J.W. Gran~, Department ~ecb~nic, is
that the Seagrave Corporation's proposal is better for the City and I therefore recommend that
~the con:rac~ be awarded to them under the term~ of their specifications which have been check-
ed ~d approved by Nr. Grant.
I further recommend that an appropriation'of $13,000.00 be made and that the
funds be secured from an issue of $13,OOO.00 of serial bonds, in denomination of $1,000.OO
each, at ~, the firs~ bond to mature in 1937 and one to mature each year thereafter; that the
Service Association was received:
~The Family Service Association, Inc., 621 Cra~.~ord St., have ex-
hausted all of their funds as of Dec. 1st. Due~ first to the allot-
ment from the Consolidated Charities not being paid~ which is never
sufficient for ot~ demands. Secondly, our case load has been more
than doubled due to the ~E.RoA. closing. Thirdly, we have had this
most unusual severe weather which has lasted for several weeks and
the people were ~uable to pick olnders snd wood to help themselves
The Family Service~Association is the only organization furnishing
fuel. For six weeks prior to Christmas, the 8al~ation ~my have had
no wood to supply our cases. All during winter, they have divided a
small truck load between six and seven f~milles, no~ more than wheel
barrow load per family° They hav~ Pons ohe best they could.
Please inst~ct us if we shall continue to car~z on thi~ work
~among Portsmouth, s most needy families, as the Consolidated Chari -
ties informed us ~oday, 1/10/36, that $113.OO would be our final
payment and no time set for the Drive~ Nr. Hawks, these deorepid
people, white and colored, m~ny with children, ages from few months
~o l0 and 12 years. Many with illness in their homes, no food, fuel
or shoes. Somebody mus~ cars, as they can. not live without these
