Hanvey, W. R.Hutchlns, S. B. Moore,. <br />J. Alden Oast, J. R. Stewart, the City Manager. <br /> <br /> Minutes of regular meeting held December 10th, 1935, and adjourned re,ilar <br />meeting of December 17th, were read and approved. <br /> <br />Rules were suspended s~ud the following petition was read: <br /> <br /> "The Board <br />help for the Home in this time of dire need. <br /> We have twenty four women in the Home, and our income is small and <br />so great, that it is hard for us to meet the monthly needs. <br /> We greatly appreciate what you are doing for us, and if it were not <br />necessary we would not make this appeal. <br /> Our collections have fallen off very much~ while our expenses have <br />and with the fuel for the 'winter, it is almost impossible to make ends meet. <br /> Hoping you will see the need and give us some financial aid. <br /> <br />of Lady Managers. of the Home for the Aged, are appealing to you for <br /> <br />expenses <br />absolutely <br />increased, <br /> <br />Very respectfully yours, <br /> <br />Board of Lady Managers, <br /> Mrs. Jobm S. Harwood, Cot. Sec." <br /> <br /> ~rivilege of the floor was granted Rev. W.H. Baylor, who spoke in favor of <br />said petition. <br /> <br />On motidn of Mr. Hutchins, same was refe~ed to the City Manager. <br /> <br />of the work of <br />the Portsmouth <br /> <br /> Privilege of the floor was granted Mrs. TrDp~ett, who spoke in commendation <br />M~. L.W. Ross, a~king that his successor be named at once, and that the nsme of <br />City Park be changed to Ross Memorial Park. <br /> <br /> The Committee on new ferry boat presented the following ordinance which was, <br />on motion of Mr. S~ewart, placed on its fi. ret reading: <br /> <br />"~¢N ORDINA2JCE AUTHOP2ZING THE BORROWING OF ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY <br />THOUSAND DOLLARS, IN ANTICIPATION OF THE REVENUE FOR 1936, ~k~ <br />PROVIDING FOR THE ISSUANCE OM A NOTE OR NOTES THEREFOR." <br /> <br /> ~he Committee to investigate <br />in lighting contract of September let, 1910, <br />of $500.00 to continue their work~ <br /> <br />the non-payment to the Cityof ~mount agreed upon <br />reported progress, and asked for s~ appropriation <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Hutohins to appropriate $500.00 for said committee, was adopted,. <br />and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Brooks,H~,-~-cT~i~rs, Fox, Hanvey, Hutchins, Moore, Oast, Mtewart. <br />Nays: None. ~ <br /> <br />The following communicationsfrom the C ~y Manager were read: <br /> <br />1st - <br /> <br />be awarded to hlm.~ <br /> <br />"Bids for the 1935 City audit were <br /> F.B. Jordsm & Compans, <br /> Monroe Nash <br /> Mr. Monroe Nash~ <br /> <br /> received, as~ f~!!ows: <br /> $1,000~00 <br /> 725.00 <br /> 850.00 <br /> 975°00 <br /> 7oo.oo <br /> 599~oo <br />being the lowest bidder, I recommend that <br /> <br />the contract <br /> <br />Motionof Mr. Stewart to concur in the Manager's recommendation, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 2nd-,The Manager presented the following ordinance, which was, on motion of M.~; Fox, <br />placed on its first reading: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINMNCE I~POSING _~ND COLLECTING TAXES ON REAL ESTATE, TANGIBLEPER- <br />SONkL PROPERTY AND MACHINERY WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, <br />VIRGINIA, FOR ~HE PUP3OSE OF RAISING REVENUE FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE GOV- <br />EP~NMENT kND THE PUBLIC DEBT FOR THE YEAR BEGINNING J~..NU~JiY 1, 1936.~ <br /> <br /> 3rd -"In DeceMoer, the Chief of the Fire Department reported that Engine #~ 'Port <br />Norfolk station~, while in service: had a connection rod ~o break away from the crank shaft <br />and seriously damage the motor. <br /> After a conference with the Fire Chief and Chief Mechanic Grant, I communicat- <br />ed with the American La France people, builders of the engine, and had their Chief ~echanic <br />come dorm, make an examination and report. <br /> The report was that the motor was damaged'beyond repair, the recommendation <br />being that the engine be rebuilt at a cost of $6,700.00, including transportation both ways. <br /> A price of $3,000,00 was made for a new motor, <br /> AS a cotu~ter-proposition, we were offered one of two en~ines, or both, now in <br />possession of the Company, but which had been in service eight years in the City of Shenan - <br /> <br /> <br />
