7th - "I received a communication from the Chief of the Fire Department, dated
August'2~th, as follows:
'On the afternoo~ of August 21st, 1936, we responded
to a box alarm (No.62) located at the intersection of
Deep Creek Boulevard and Gosport Road. On arrival, foUnd
a storage shed of the National Utilization Company in a
blaze. ~e worked from 5:30 P.M.' on ~he 21st until 4:00
A.M. on the 22nd~ before this fire was brought under oon~
trol, necessitating the use of four engine companies and
one truck, two-thirds of the personnel, and forty-five
hundred feet of two ~ud one half inch hose.
We burst two thousand feet of two and one-~lf inch
hose~by reason of long lay outs and old hose. This puts
my Department in emergency of the first water.
I am recommendin~ that four thousand feet of ~wo and
one half inch rubber-lined, cctton~ multiple-woven hose
be purchase~ immediately, as we are in dire need of this
hose.~
In my report of~ August llth, in which I recommended the purchase of two
thousand feet of hose, I quoted from ~he Chief's letter, in which he stated that the Depart -
merit was in serious need of 5,900 feet, to be distributed as follows:

Engine ~o: No. 1 70o feet'
" #- " 2 1,~00 "
~ ~ ~ 3 1,200 "

" ~ " 5 800 u
It appears tha~ ~,000 feet more~will be required to supply 5,900 feet
requested originally, which will supply all pumpers with the reGuired quantity of hose.
In June of this year, 1,500 feet of hose, Under competitive bids, were
awarded to Quaker City Rubber Oompamy, a~ $1.10 and recen$1y 2,000~ feet were ordered at the
same price. The City may, now, enter into an arrangement wi~h the Quaker City Rubber Company,
for ~,000 feet of the same hose; viz., Unity Multiple-woven hose, compled with National Stan-
dard threads at $1.10 per foot, the same price as recently paid; that the shipment will be
made promptly and billed as of January 1st, 1937, less 2% discount if paid within ten days,
or ne~ 60 days.
