November 10th. <br /> <br />Resolution <br /> <br /> ~WHEREAS, the present system of privately-sold school books <br />has been found very ~usatisfactory, been widely orotested and <br />ia of exorbitant expense to the many poorer parents of local <br />sohool children, placing a premium on~so-called ~free education" <br />that the poor can not afford to pay, and <br /> WHEREAS, it is a recognized principle in Ar~erica, that the <br /> ~ost of education should be borne by ~he public and paid for out <br /> of public funds, and <br /> WHEREAS~ the American Pubiic School SysTem constitutes the <br />orincipal pillar in the fo~udation of our form of government, and <br />bolds forth our,c~f hope for continuing the benefits of popu~!ar <br />government for posterity; and <br /> WHEREAS, text hooks are absolutely essential to education as <br />provided in our public schools, and therefore should be as much a <br />part of the system for educating the youth of the land as are the <br />very buildings in which the class rooms are located, and <br /> NHEREAS, the better control and more intelligent supervision of <br />the selection of text books would be possible, and would be a logi- <br />cal result of the publication or purchase out of the public ~rea <br />sury of text books for study by the children in the public schools, <br />and, <br /> WHEi~S, public purchase or printing of text books would affect <br />a material reduction in the unit cost of such books not possible <br />to obtain in an~ Qther manner, besides relieving the parents of an <br />unnecessary expense in supplying text books to their children each <br />term, the books changing so frequently for some unexolained rea- <br />son, tha~ new books have to be bought almos~ every t~rm, be it <br />hereby, <br /> RESOLVED, that we~ the undersigned Legislative Committee of the <br />Portsmouth Central Labor Union do hereby urge upon your honorable <br />body the advisability of appropriating the necessary sums ~o cover <br />the purchase of text books for the public schools of th~ City. <br /> <br />(Signed) V.E. tylvester, Chairman. <br /> <br /> E~. Powel] <br /> P~ Berna.e <br /> <br />was adopted~ <br /> <br /> "I~ is my desire to give our annual charity show at the City Auditorium on <br />December ytho It has been your pleasure ~o give us the use of this auditorium for this Der ~ <br />formance yearly after we made the usual fee for its use. - <br /> This show sponsored by the Helping Hand Mission of Portsmouth is a produc- <br />tion made up of s~ateur talent that donat~ their services gratis ~o help this good cause. <br />There is no admission charged ~o this show as only an article of food that is not perishable <br />will admit anyone. During the week before Xmas this food is distributed to indigents of the <br />City by baskets. <br /> This year we are in a poor financial condition, and we are asking that the <br />Council give us the hall on this date this year, without pu~ting ~n the usual fee of ~25.00 <br />so as no cash will be involved in any transaction of this year's p~oduction. <br /> The Helping Hand Mission in which Mr. J.H. ~oodworth is Supt. has had a <br />great deal of clients to care for and only through the help of some merchants of this City <br />has made it through the year. <br /> However, there are a plenty ~o ~ake care of on this~Xmas, is our only rea- <br />son we are asking this favor of you gentlemen. <br /> Hoping you see fit to ~ender this assistance to us, we beg to remain, <br /> <br />the usual fee <br /> <br /> Yours very t~uly, <br /> <br /> (Signed) E.
