<br />ness license of $21.00 per year. I have applied for same, and am told uhless I pay personal
<br />property taxes from 1931 to 1935 on household goods. I can not get a license. I have not
<br />lived in. Portsmouth during this time..My home address is 525 Peele St., Norfolk. I don't
<br />know why.~ was not taken, off~The tax list. I have listed no taxes nor seen the assessor in
<br />this period, as I have this same tax So pay in Norfolk, ~nd should not be liable for the same
<br />in both oities. I have noshing in workshop taxable, have only my tools less then $40. worth.
<br /> I was adMised by the License Inspector to write you on the matter to see if
<br />there could be any adjus~men$ made.

<br />the abo~e body, and adopted by the body at its regular meeting, held on t_he above date.
<br /> The subjects of the resolutions are also matters we have oftendi$cussed with
<br />you gentlemen verbally.
<br /> We trust that they w~ill meet with your earnest consideratiGn, action ~und ap -
<br />proval, prior to your disposal of the 1937 city budget.
<br /> With renewed assurances of our-sincere desire to co-operate with you on any

<br />Resolution - ,WHEREAS, until recent date, the School Boar& of this City
<br /> of Portsmouth, Virginia, had stated as it~ major needs the fol
<br /> lowing, in order:
<br /> 1. A new school building for c~l~red children.
<br /> 2. ResY0ration of six of the current sixteen per
<br /> cent reduction in salaries, suffered by its
<br /> teachers.
<br /> 3. Free school books for all children attending
<br /> the so-called ~public schools
<br /> WHEREAS, a sufficient sum of money has been allotted by a
<br /> recent Federal grant, making possible the achievement of objec-
<br /> tive number one, requiring, it is ~ai~, mu outlay of but $6,000.
<br /> annually by the City, pending the construction of the said build-
<br /> ing (a saving of a considerable sum for the City), and
<br /> WHEREAS, it is a matter of common knowledge that school teach-
<br /> ers and other public servants in Norfolk and other localities have
<br /> had ~heir ~depression pay cuts" restored, in whole or in part, and
<br /> ~HEREAS, the undersigned have long championed adeq'~ate compen-
<br /> sation for public servants and others,_ and believing that we take
<br /> this course in the bess interests of our public schools, therefore
<br /> be it hereby
<br /> RESOLVED by the undersigned Legislative Committee of the ports-
<br /> mouth Central Labor Union, that we herewith heartily endorse the
<br /> said restoration of six of the present sixteen per cent salary cut
<br /> to the ~eachers of our schools, and do urge upon your honorsJole
<br /> body the necessity of se~ting aside in the Budget for the Calendar
<br /> Year of 1937, sufficient funds to care for the said Restoration.
