~As you are probably aware, this company became the unwilling but necessary
purchasers of the Wilkins plant property, when the owners became financially embarrassed.
It is also a matter of record that all back taxes have been paid on the property.
We are addressing you with reference to She heavy damages done this property
las~ September, by the hurricane, whioh has greatly reduced its value and as a result there-
of, we hereby make application for a reduction in assessment.
As may be verified, this severe storm entirely destroyed the sawdust house
and also completely unroofed one-half of the main mill building, lifting the roof off bidily,
demolishing it and scattering the debris across the street. This damage is conservatively
estimated to be to the extent of $3,000°00 loss.
We, therefore, respectfully request, in view of these unfortunate circumstan-
ces, a reduction by this amount in the assessment of the property and relief from the burden
of paying taxes on the assessed value, which has been partially destroyed and no longer ex -
isis in its entirety.
Very respectfully submitted,

Nansemond Lumber Company

H&t a meeting of Portsmouth Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy,
held today, there was a discussion regarding the proposal to demolish the old County Court
Rouse. -
The feeling of the meeting was strongly against such a proposal and hereby
enters its protest for reasons briefly stated as
Elimination of a landmark of historical importsnoe.
The sentiment of affection and respect it has gathered
down the many years of its existence.
The fact that the new structure would lack such asso-
ciations.
The inconsistency of doing away with a souvenir of olden
times, while not many miles away, millions ~have been
spent in the restoration of buildings in en old Vir-
ginia City -WiIIiamshurg.
Other reasons could be given, but what need of more than these?
- - Therefore, the Daughters, in meeting assembled, resolved that the City Man-
ager be advised of the way in which-they regard the proposal and express the earnest hope
that their plea for preserving the building be favorably considered and that you lend your
support.
There is no wish on their part to stand in the way of progress. If such is
the purpose behind the movement, their feeling is regret that the Court House with its S~tely
grandeur should be considered as having outlived its usefulness, whereas, as a matter of fact,
it is still serviceable and stands as a monument of Old Southern Days and Associations.

Respectfully,
