<br /> It appearing to the Board that the effect of such proposed
<br />acquisition or.control bf said Peninsula Transit Cor~ooration would be
<br />to give to the Ricb_mond Greyhound Line~, Inc., a complete monopoly of
<br />the transportat ion of passengers by motor vehicle between Richmond and
<br />th~ territories north and west; and
<br /> Whereas, this City is now served by the lines of the Peninsula
<br />Transit Corporation in active competition with the Richmond Greyhound
<br />Lines, Inc.,
<br /> THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that this Council, as the r~preGen
<br />tatives of the people of Portsmouth, hereby declares-its opposition to
<br />the monopoly which would be created by the approval .of the application
<br />of the Richmond Greyhound Lines, Inc., to acquire control of the Penin-
<br />sula Transit Corpn.,
<br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that im the opinion of this Council, such
<br />a monopoly would be injurious to the welfare of the people of this 6ity
<br />and of all the cities and counties of the Hampton Roads area; and that
<br />it is conducive to the public interest that the Peninsula Trsmsit Corpor-
<br />ation remain a competitor of the Richmond Greyhound Lines,' Inc., and its
<br />allied companies between the Virginia Seaboard and the territory north-
<br />ward and westward thereof.
<br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLMED~that .a copy o~ this resolution be trane

<br /> The following communication from the City ~anager, continued on table from
<br />last meeting, was taken up and read:

<br /> "Mr. Morris Sackstein applied for permit to remodel an old house at the co~-
<br />ncr of Emmett and Green Stsc, making a s~ore below and dwelling above.
<br /> I have viewed the premises, and I see no good reason why the permit should
<br />not be granted, but there is a letter on file, from Mr.~ H~A. Irving and others, asking that
<br />the permit be denied.
<br /> I feel, therefore, it is my duty to submit the matter to the 00uo~il."
<br />
<br /> The City Manager stated that Mr. Saokstein had asked permission to withdraw
<br />his application.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Hutchins that Mr. Sackstein be allowed to withdraw his applica-
<br />tion, was adopted.
<br />
<br />The following ordinance, laid on table at last meeting, was taken up and read:
