This is a much larger proposition than it appears to be on the surface." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> 6th - "At your last meeting, there was referred to the ~mager the question <br />of having route signs put on buses. <br /> I have taken this ma~er up with the Virginia Electric & Power Company <br />and I have the attached letter from Mr~ Ross~ ~iauager of the Company, in Portsmouth." <br /> <br /> Inclosure - <br /> "i have your letter of October 21st, notifying us of the resolution passed by <br />the City Council at its last meeting, relating to route signs on our buses. <br /> Of course, there is not time between now and tomorrow night for me to obtain <br />the necessary viewpoint of oUr management before giving you an ~uswer, however, as a bus rider <br />myself, I understand your request and I-am se~ding it on for consideration. <br /> I will reply to your letter in further detail~ as soon as i nave received word <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />F. Ross, Manager°" <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br />?th - The Msnager presented the following ordinm~ce: <br /> <br /> ~AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND AND RE-ORDAiN SECTION 375 OF THE CODE OF <br />THE CITY OF PORTS~O~TH, BWJ&TING TO HAND BILLS~ POSTERS, TRASH AND GARBAGE." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Hutc~hins, said ordinsnce was placed on its first reading. <br /> <br /> 8th - "When I returned from .my trip to Detroit, I found Admiral ~imons in a <br />Jam, and unable to get.sufficient men to finish the building ways° <br /> I immediately contacted William A. Smith, State A&ministrator~ Works <br />Progress Administration, and he informed me that the rules laid~down in ~ashington had his <br />hands tied; so I asked him if he would be offended if we tried to bresk the Jam from the <br />Washington end. Withl~. Smith's consent, t contacted Congressmsm Darden, who promised to have <br />a conference with Colonel Harrington, National Federal Commissioner, W.P.A., the next day. He <br />held this conference with Colonel Harri~_~ton, and as a result, Colonel Harrington inst_~cted <br />Willis~ A. Smith, Btate Administrator, to furnish the Admiral the ?~lp he needed. <br /> I received the attached telegram from Congressman Darden and also the <br />attached letter from Admiral Simons." <br /> <br />Inclosures - <br /> "Just talked to Colonel Harrington WPA Administrator I am glad to advise <br /> t~hat he is immediately authorizing increase of Virginia quota by n-mmber <br /> sufficient ~o tsd~e care of building ways at Yard Entire number needed <br /> will be made available at once so work can be rushed to completion <br /> <br />Colgate W Darden Jr." <br /> <br /> "Thank you for your good news relative to the prosecution of %~Drk on our <br />building ways. <br /> I always _-know that when I am in a jam here at the Yard smd succeed in getting <br />you to put your hs~ud to the plow, that the whole thing will immediately clear up. <br /> In behalf of the Yar~, the~Alabama, and the needy of Portsmouth, I thank you <br />for your gallant rescue. <br /> I hope, now, that you ~ll put some of your effective high pressure on the <br />Portsmouth welfare workers, in order that we may get a speedy return of some of our needed <br />workers. <br /> With best Eishes and looking forward to seeing you soon, <br /> <br />Your frlend, <br /> <br /> M.H.
