Grimes, <br />Frank D. Lav~enee, Co E. Warren, <br />Wilson and the Oity Manager. <br /> <br />james N. Howard, W. R. Hutch~ns, _ <br />H. Earl Weiseman, Pearle J. <br /> <br />Minutes of regular meeting held October loth were read and. approved. <br />The following communications from t?~e 0ity Manager were re~d: <br /> <br /> 1st The Manager presented the following letter and recon~.~ended an appro <br />priation of $!25.OO for same: <br /> <br /> "Referring to the underground, tank and metered pu~o for gasoline at <br />.the City Armory, mentioned by Captain Atkins in our conference last Saturday morning. <br /> The Texas Oil Company (Mr. Allen) has consented to sell the City the <br />following used equipment: - <br /> i Te3zk550 gallons ~25. OO <br /> I Pump with meter 60.00 <br /> <br /> $85.OO <br /> We can probably install this equipment for $40.OO making a total ef <br />$125.OO; t?~s item is not in the budget for the Armory for the year 1939, but I think we have <br />money enough in the budget to cover the cost. <br /> It may be that you can obtain a lower price from another Oil Company <br />supplying gasoline to the Oity. <br /> If you should decide not to spend this money in 1939, I suggest that <br />you add the amount to the budget which I will submit for the year 1940, as the present method <br />of storing and using gasoline creates a fire hazard. <br /> Yours truly, <br /> <br />Davis, Superintendent." <br /> <br /> Eotion of Er. Howard to appropriate 3125.OO for said purpose was adopted, <br />and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes - Leigh, Grimes, Howard, Hutahins, <br /> Weiseman, Wilson <br />Nays - None <br /> <br />Lawrence~ Warren, <br /> <br /> 2nd - The Manager presented the following letter: <br /> <br /> "This is ~o certify that James O. Hall was sponsor for an entertain - <br />sent which was given by a group under his sponsorship for the Athletic Association of Norcom <br />Hi~n School, last Friday night, October 2Oth, at the City Auditorium. <br /> The financial results were small, after Ihe expenses had been met; <br />netting a balance of $12.35. <br /> Total received from sale of tickets --~ $31.35 <br /> Expenses ............................ <br /> <br /> Balance ......................... ~!2.~5 <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />W.E. Riddick, Principal." <br /> <br />with recommendation that the $15.pO be refunded. <br /> <br /> Eotion of ~. HutCains to concur, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 3rd - "The Atlantic Coas~ Line P~.i!road owes the City of Portsmouth <br />$4,26%.31, on account of damage done one of our fire trucks in a collision at the Nt. Vernon <br />Ave. crossing. This is the actual amount that we paid. the factory for damages. <br /> On October-lyth, I notified the Atlantic Coast Line that we had <br />paid the factory in full and requested the railroad company to forward check to the City to <br />cover same. A few days later, the Coast Line Attorney, ~r. Taylor, called to see us ~nd of - <br />feted to pay one half of the amount of the damage which the City Attorney and ~ager refused. <br />It s~pears now that we ~lll have to bring suit, which will be done at once, if there is no <br />objection, as I am convinced that is the only way we can recover the full amount of the dam - <br /> <br /> ~otion of Er. HutCnins to instruct the City l~nager to bring suit to mego - <br />vet the amount dne, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 4th - "At a recent meeting of the Council, complaint was made about the <br />condition of the south end of Uashington St. <br /> i referred this complaint to the City Engineer for investigation <br />and reoort and he reports as follows, in his letter attae~ed, which I will now read.~ <br /> <br /> Inclosure - <br /> "Referring to complaint of residents on Washington St., from the 900 thr~ <br />t~e 14OO blocks concerning dust from construction~operations in the removal of parkways, and <br />the racing of a~tomoblles from the baseball park at night. <br /> <br /> <br />
