Shirley Hop% State Game Warden, for destroying sixty seven tag!ess <br />dogs, at $2°50 each, totaling $167o50, was presented. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Hutc.~ns, the Treasurer was authorized to pay same from funds <br />in her hands from collection of Dog Taxes. <br /> <br /> The fol!ox~_ng letter was read, and on motion of Er. Fox~ z-eferred to the Com - <br />missioner of Revenue: <br /> <br /> "~he Woman's Club of Portsmouth, a civic orgemization~ contemplates the im - <br />mediate purchase of a Club F~me on ~iddle Street, and~ in o~xter to meet payments on same, it <br />will be necessary to ren~ rooms on the second floor. <br /> It is also a philanthropic body which seeks to serve the community, having <br />raised last year for Oancer control~ $938.OO, as tD~ contribution of Portsmouth city. It con- <br />tributes glasses to unde.~Lprivileged children of the City s~d does much other outstanding wel - <br />fare work. It presents educational and citizenship progr~s for the publie~ mud last year <br />sponsored the citizenship day at %~oodrOwWilson High School. <br /> The Club House ~ll be available to the City for any ~ture patriotic obser- <br />vance. In other cities, Women's Clubs of the s3oove nature are free of taxes; s~ud we resoectfu!l <br />request that your body extend to us the same status in Portsmouth. <br /> We shall appreciate e_uy co-operation in t~s matter you are able to extend. <br /> <br />~inoer~y, <br /> <br />Mrs. J. Hutchins~ referred to <br /> <br />the City F~anager: <br /> <br /> ~l~ns CD~unber of Commerce respectfully begs to call attention ts your Honor- <br />sDle Body of. traffic conditions now existing in our streets. <br /> On account of the large numbers of motor vehicles now in our city, result- <br />ing in congestions on ou_~ main thorougD~ares, it is evident accidents ars liable to occur, and <br />in case of fire~ the Department would be seriously handicapped in reaching such firem. Further <br />we believe that our stores are losing business on account of difficulty in parking. <br /> in consideration of conditions which row confront us~ it is suggested to <br />your Honorable Body that an exp_ert be e~oloyed to make a complete survey of these conditions. <br />It is thought that the Government in connection wi~h the Defense Program is more or less res - <br />ponsib!e for these conditions~ that ws might reasonably e~ect fedsral aid in working out this <br />problem~ <br /> ~ae Chamber of Commerce also wishes to compliment the Honorable City Coun- <br />cil~i4~y~,.~g~i¢! in providir~ parking meters for certain of our streets. It ~Opears that these <br />meters have been of much assistance in handling parking~ and as meters have sho~,m their useful- <br />ness on High St., it is suggested that other streets in the business section might also be pro- <br />vided with meters. <br /> Trusting that you will give consideration v~ these matters, we remain, with <br />assurance of high esteem. <br /> Very sincerely~ <br /> <br />J.M. Overton, Secretary, <br /> Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce." <br /> <br />The fol!o~_ng letter was read and~ on motion cf Mr~ Hutchins, referred to <br /> <br />the City Attorney: <br /> <br /> "It has come ~o my attention tb~t an ordinance has been passed in the City <br />of ~or~smouth, placing Christian Science practitioners in the seme category as physicians, sur <br />geons~ opticians~ occulists, osteopaths~ chiropractors ~ud chiropodists, and requiring them to <br />pay a license. <br /> <br /> <br />
