Benson and Miss Annie C. Barlow I <br /> <br />to be refunded $ for taxes on the la~ acquired by the United States of ~mericaunder <br /> proceedings, About seven and one half acres of the twelve acre tract of land <br />belongingC°ndemnati°nto Mrs. Benson and Miss Barlow was acquired by the United states Of America under a <br />Declaration of Taking ae of Aoril 22, 1941. Er. Bergeron, City Engineer~ ?~s made a ca!cuba <br />tion of the acreage and Mr. ~.L. Hutchins, Commissioner of Revenue h~s fixed the amounts. Mrs. <br />Barlow and Miss Benson should be refunded $45. OO paid by them under the pre-payment t ax plan, <br />The State law relieves them from taxes from the date o f the Court Order which E as April 22, <br />1941. <br /> Second: The land of the Portsmouth Hotel Corporation requesting a <br />refund of $43-75 for taxes paid for 19~ on the building 501 High St, It ap~ars that the <br />building at 501 High St. was razed in 1940 and should have been taken off the tax books for <br />1941, The building, however, was assessed for 19~l a~ $3~5OO.O0~ and i n order to avoid pen <br />alties the tax was paid~ and the sum of $8~o50 should be refunded. <br /> ~rd: Reques~ of W, R. Ashburn, Ex~Jainer of Records, 28 Judicial <br />Circuit for relief of Gabs E~ Worley of ~axes assessed on boat"Mary Elizabeth~ at ~250~O0 <br />value. Mr. Worley disposed of this boat in 1939 and should be relieved of the following tax- <br />es: 1940 $ 6.25 <br /> 19~l 6.25 <br /> Fourth: Request of. Jesse ~. Gill to be relieved of $i4.~3 for taxes <br />assessed on ~roperty 215 Fourth Ave. The commissione~ of Revenue made an error of $5OO.00 in <br />a~essing the building on the lot of land charged in the name of George T. McLean as lot G <br />Block K, ~ourth Ave. He relieved the taxes amounting to $12.50 on July 2~ 194~; but the <br />American National Bank, which holds a lien on the property~ paid the tax and required Mr~ill <br />to pay it in the entire amount. Mr. Gill should be refunded the sum of $12.50.~ <br /> Motion of Mr. Hutchins to concur in ~he Attorney's recommendation and to ap- <br /> propriate $145.OOto pay said refund, was adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Fox, Grimes, Hall, Howard, Hu~hins, Lawrence~ Warren, Wilson <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />The,Attorney presented the following ordinance: <br /> <br />I~AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING T~E ISSUANCE OF SIXTY TWO <br />THOUSANDL.DOLLARS OF RE~Uh~DING BONDS OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSEOUTH~ VIRGINIA~ N~KING PROVISION FOR THE FOR~I <br />OF SAID BONDS A!~D FOR THE PAYMENT THEREOF. ~ <br /> <br /> Notion o f Er.
