"The U.S.-Army~ngineers supervised the construction of the local recrea-
tion building for service men ~tO~awford and South Sts., Port~mouth. For more-than two months
no~, a full program ofactivities for men in uniform hns been conducted by the U.S, Organiza -
tions. .The grading and seeding of the grounds which~ere to have been carried out by the W.P.A,
have not yet been started. The presence in t~he grounds of ~oou~ 900 square feetof old con -
crete, work further increased the work involved. The Smprovement of the grounds would have the
added advantage of aiding in the control of ~h~ dust now so plentiful in the location.
At a recur meeting of the USO Oouneil, a motion mad~ by Mt. Sol Fass was
passed, requesting theOity Council to approve the installation of a street .light on South St.
and to provide for the laying of a sidewalk in front of the USO building. The street in front
of the building is at present inadequately lighted. The Club premises are visited at night by
ledge numbers of women attending the dances and other activities.
I .am w~i$1ng to ask tf~ anything cambe done by the City to expedite the
improvement of the grounds to make them correspond in beauty to the interior of the building
itself, and to install ~the street light and sidewalk .requested in the resolution of tZ~eCouncil.
