November PTth <br /> <br />dered and discussed the question of whether or not there is <br />a public need for common carrier passenger service by motor. <br />vehicle between Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, over the <br />above described routes and is of the opinion that there is a <br />public need Tot such trans~ortat-ion and that such transporta- <br />tion will greatly serve the convenience of ~he public;and, <br /> WHEREAS, the 0ouncil of the City of Portsmouth is familiar <br />with the common carrier service being rendered by Norfolk <br />Southern Bus Corooration between Norfolk and Virginia Beach <br />and in the Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach area and <br />the Council is fully justified in believing that Norfolk <br />Southern Bus Corporation is and willing to render reasonably <br />adequate and continuous common carrier passenger service by <br />motor vehicle over the route and between the points above de- <br />scribed; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT Resolved that the'Council of the City <br /> of Portsmouth respectfully recommends that the State Corpora-- <br /> tion 0ommission grant the application of Norfolk-Southern Bus <br /> Corporation to operate as a common carrier by motor vehicle <br /> for the handltug of passengers between the City o f Portsmouth <br /> and the Junctions a~ O.k. Highways Nos. 13 and 58 over ths~above <br /> demcribed routes. <br /> Be it further Resolved that copies of this resolution be <br /> transmitted to the State Corporation Commission and to Norfolk- <br /> Southern BusCorporation." <br /> <br />November llth, 19~5, <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Howard, said resolution was adopted. <br /> <br /> 2nd - "We are in receipt of Sergeant AK T. Porter's resignat.ion, <br />which has been accepted.'~ <br /> <br />dated <br /> <br />On motion filed. <br /> <br /> 3rd - "We are in receipt of a request fmom t~e Wayside Market for per- <br />mission to attach their sewer lines to the City's. They have inclosed a check for twenty- <br />five ($25.00) dolla~rs and I am recommending that I be authcmized to allow the connection for <br />this amount, ~With a proviso that in the event that added charges are made for sewage treatment <br />either by the City of Portsmouth or the Hampton Roads Sanitation 0ommission, will be in addi- <br />tion to the present'amount." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Grimes to concur in the Manager's recommendation,was <br /> <br />adopted. <br /> <br /> ~th~- "Will you please place on its first reading, ~An Ordinance to <br />Regulate-the Licensing and Operation of Taxi-Cabs and For-Hire Oars on the Streets of the City <br />of Portsmouth'~'' <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Howard, the Manager's recommendation was concurred in. <br /> <br /> 5th ~The National Marine League of which the local association is a <br />member, has requested the Oity's permission to use the nom~hwest corner of Washington and Hig~ <br />Streets for the displaying .of a Japanese airplane. They will have the plane in a tent that <br />will necessitate using a portion of the sidewalk and some of the street. I have given permis- <br />sion for this worthy cause and I would appreciate your concurrence in my decision.~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. ~Sturtevant to concur in the Manager's recommendation, <br />was adopted. <br /> <br /> 6th - "It is necessary for us to secure legal assistance for the City <br />Attorney during the coming annexation.proceedings, and I would like'authority to employ addi- <br />tional aid." <br /> <br /> ~Motion of Mr. Howard to concur in the Manager's recammendation, was <br />adopted. <br /> <br /> lth - ~I am recommending that the regular Council meeting scheduled <br />for December llth, be changed to December 18th, at which time.there will be a publichearing <br />on the 19$6~bu~get, and the meeting Of December 25th be moved to December 26th, 19~5." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Sturtevant to concur in the Manager's recommendation,was <br />adopted. <br /> <br /> 8th ~I have been advised b~ Mr. Louis T..Klauder, that he expects to <br />be in Portsmouth on December 3md to discus~ our pm~e~ sqrvey." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br />Company.~ <br /> <br />9th - ~I am in receipt of the attached letter from ~h~ Austin R.Davis <br /> <br /> ~WH~MEAS, on numerous occasions during the past ten years, <br />prominen~ citizens and city officials have suggested that, in <br />the interest of Civic progress, ~nd to eliminate a dangerous <br />hazard to motorists, the Confederate monument located a~ the <br /> <br /> <br />
