Grimes, James N.Howard, W.R. Hutchins, <br />Frank D.Lawrence, E. Robie Sturtevant,C. E. Warren, H. Earl Weiseman, <br />Pearle J. Wilson, and Arthur S. Owens, City Manager. <br /> <br /> Minutes of regular meeting held November t3th were read and approved. <br /> <br /> The following letter from Mr. Jesse M. Overton, Chairman of the Planning Commis- <br />sion of the City of Portsmouth,-was read: <br /> <br /> "The Planning 0ommission of the Oity of Portsmouth has adopted a resolution <br />recommending to the City Oounoil that the City of Portsmo~uth be divided into zones as shown on <br />a map prepared by Harland Barhholomew Associates, Incorporated in~o the attached proposed <br />zoning~dinance, and that ~he ordinance be adopted, and made effective in the 0ity of Ports- <br />mouth.~ <br /> <br /> The Chair stated that the Planning Ordinance would have to be advertised and a <br />public meeting set for its consideration and that the communication would be referred to a <br />public meeting to be held Dee.ember 26th, 19.$~. <br /> <br />The following communications from t~e City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> !st - "During the past three years, my office has attempted on several occa- <br />sions to secure adequate transportation services for our people who desire to visit Virginia <br />Beach during the summer season, The Norfolk Souther~ Bus Corooration has petitioned the State <br />Corporation On,mission for a direct line from Portsmouth ~o ~irginia Beach. <br /> It seems befitting that this body should adopt a resolution to the <br />State Corporation Commission, urging the route be granted." <br /> <br /> On <br />Green, a representative <br />resolution be approved: <br /> <br />of the Norfolk Southern Bus <br /> <br />motion of Mr. Howard, the privilege of the floor was granted to Mr. Fred W. <br /> Company, who asked that the following <br /> <br />"WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth is advised <br />that Norfolk Southern Bus Corporation has applied to the <br />State Cornoration Commission of Virginia for a certificate <br />of public convenience and necessity as a Qommon carrier by <br />motor vehicle for the handling of passengers between the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, and the Junction of U.S. High~ <br />ways Nos. 13 and 58 over the following routes, to-wit: <br />Beginning at Greyhound Bus Terminal, City of Portsmouth; <br />thence along High Street to Berkley Ferry; thence via Ferry <br />to Berkley, Nerfolk, Virginia; thence through Berkley~ Nor- <br />folk, Virginia; OVer Chestnut St., Berkley Avenue, South <br />Main Street and Liberty Street to South Norfolk city limits; <br />thence through the City of South Norfolk over Liberty Street <br />to Twenty-Second Street; thence northeastwardly via U.S. <br />Highway No. 460 and over the Norfolk Southern an~ Norfolk <br />and Western Railway overpass ~o the City Limits o~ South <br />Norfolk; thence noEtheastwardly over U.S. Highway No. 460 <br />along Wilson Road to the intersection of Wilson Road and <br /> d- <br />Indian River Rca , thence eastwardly over IndianRiver Road <br />to U.S. Highway No. 13; thence northwardly on U.S. Highway <br />No. 13 to the intersection of U.S. Highway Numbers 13 and <br />58, better known as Virginia Beach Boulevard. <br /> Beginning at Greyhound Bus Terminal, City of Portsmouth, <br />via U.S. Highway No. l~ to the intersection of U.S. Highway <br />No. l? and Virginia Highway No. 33?; thence along Vi~rEinia <br />Highway No. 337 and over the Toll Bridge to the City Limits <br />of South Norfolk; thence along Virginia Highway No, 337 to <br />the intersection of Virginia Highway No. 33~ and U.S. High- <br />way No. 460; thence northwardly on U.S. Highway No. 460 and <br />Bainbridge Street ~o the intersection of Bainbridge Street <br />and Poindex~er Street; thence northeastwardly on U.S. High- <br />way No. 460 and Poindexter Street to the intersection of <br />Twenty-second and Liberty Streets; thence nor~heastwardly on <br />U.S. Highway No. 460 over the Norfolk and Western and Norfolk- <br />Southern Railway owerpass ~o'th~ City Lim.~s~ of South Norfolk; <br />thence northeastwardlyalong U.S. Highway No~ 460 and Wilson . <br />Road to the intersection of Wilson Road and Indian River Roa~, <br />thence eastwardly on Indian River Road to t'he ir~rsection of <br />Indian River~Road a~nd'U.'S~-~HiEhway No. 13~;~'th~nce northwardly <br />on U.S. Highway No. 13 to the intersection of U.S. Highway Nos. <br />13 m d 58, better know~ ~s~Virginia Beach Boulevard,' aud <br />~W~.REAS, the granting of the right by the State Corporation <br />Commission to Norfoik Southern Bus C0~poratidn to operate com <br />mon carrier passenger service by motor vehicle between the <br />points and o~eP'the routes ahove, described will enable the <br />Norfolk Southe~ Bus Corporation-to fdr~ish~he people of <br />PortsmoUth, and other~, transportAtion'by a~hort and direct <br />route ~to and fre~ Virginia Beach, Virginia; and, <br /> ~F~AS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth has consi- <br /> <br /> <br />
