<br /> Virginia, has the advantage of retaining ~he name by which your
<br /> Yard has for many years become to be known through ~he Navy.
<br /> While a~ the same time, it gi~es recognition to the fact that
<br /> the Yard's physical location is in Portsmouth.~
<br /> 'The Navy Department sincerely regrets its inability to
<br /> comply with your request', but hopes that notwithstanding
<br /> this inability, it may continue to count on your suppor~ and
<br /> co-operation in the maintenance of a capable and efficient
<br /> Naval Shiphard at Portsmouth. ~
<br /> If there are further instructions that the Honorable 0oun-
<br />cil would like with reference to changing of the name, I will lend every effort possible."

<br />The following letter from ~he~City Attorn~ was read:

<br /> "There is an unimproved lot at the corner of Charleston Ave. and
<br />Randolp~ Street, which is-assessed to Alexander Eason, and upon which no taxes have been paid
<br />since 1919. At one time there appears to have been a small store on the land and the princi-
<br />pal amount of the taxes for several years wa~ in excess of $80.00 per year, and the building
<br />appears to have been assessed against the land for several years was in excess of $80.00
<br />per yea~ and the building appears to have been assessed agains~ theland for several years
<br />.after it was removed. The to~al amount of the taxes~w due on the land is. in excess of
<br />~l,O00. Mr. Alexander Eason died several, years ago and there ~s no eeta~.e out of which~ ~he
<br />taxes can be ccllected. I have secured a deed from the heirs conveying the ~roperty to the
<br />City, and I recommend that the deed be accepted in settleme~ of the taxes and that the City
<br />Auditor be directed to relieve the City Collector for the collection of the taxes, due for
<br />the years 1920 to 1945 both inclusive. It will be necessary for ~he City to pay the record-
<br />ing fee of a power of attorney from the husband of one of the heirs."
