J~anuary 8th, 1946. <br /> <br /> Notion of Mr. Wilson that the Council endorse said resolution and that <br />per officers be authorized to execute same, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read and on motion filed: <br /> <br /> wit is with sincere and profound regret that I am obliged to terminate my <br />services in the U S. Publ~ Health Service as Director of Public Health in the City of Ports <br />mouth, Virginia. <br /> . I wish tO acknowledge my sincere appreciation of your loyal co-operation <br />in all efforts of this Department to further establish ahd maintain a Public Health Department <br />of high standing, and it is my hope that ~our co-operation will continue so that even better <br />public health servlces can be ~en~ared to the fine citizens of your City. <br /> <br />Respectfully, <br /> <br />pro <br /> <br /> Blinn A. Buell, N.D." <br />The following letter was'read: <br /> <br /> "The Joint Committees of the City Employees, the Ferry workers and the <br />Legislative committee of the Central Labor Union, Who have been meeting for the study and dis- <br />cussion of retirement plans, have instructed me to write to City Council through you, and ask <br />that representatives from this Joint committee be permitted To serve with the City Council Re- <br />tirement Committee. <br /> The pnrpose of this request is for closer co-operation in the study of a <br />tentative retirement plan which would be of mutual benefit to all concerned. <br /> Members of this Joint committee will be present at the meeting of City <br />Council on the night of January 8th, and respectfully ask that this request be given serious <br />consideration. <br /> With best wishes, I am, <br /> Yours very truly, <br /> <br />Glenn T. ~rey,. <br /> Acting Secretary, Joint Committees." <br /> <br />the City Manager: <br /> <br />Notion of Mr. Weiseman to refer to Committee on Pensions, was adopted. <br /> <br />THe following letter was read and on motion of.Nr.Weiseman, referred to <br /> <br /> "When the School BoArd, at its meeting on Frida~ night, January 4th, was <br />informed that the City appropriation for 19~6 was $~00,O00., a reduction of ~12,363. from the <br />amount ~quested by the School Board, a resolution oDfered by Mr. N.H. Raooport was unanimously ! <br />adopted, directing me to write your honorabl~ body deploring the cut and-urging that the school1 <br />appropriation be made as requested. The Board requested me to inf~rm you that the School Bud- <br />get was formulated with a great deal of study and care, and represented the considered Judg- <br />ment of the Board fo~ the best interests of the school children of Portsmouth. It sincerely <br />hopes, therefore, that the .Honorable City Council will reconsider its action. <br /> The Board also requested me t6 state to ~ou that if additional money <br />should be received from any increase in the State aporopriationTor schools for the year 1946, <br />the Board would reduce the amount requested from the City Council by that amount. There is a <br />strong probability that there may be some increase in school appropriations by the General As- <br />sembly, but there is no assurance of this. The Board wishes to be assured by the City Council <br />that th~ requested appropriation will be made if it becomes necessary. <br /> The Board also directed me to convey_to you its sincere thanks for the <br />fair and Just treatment the schools have received at your hand~ in the past and to express its <br />very great appreciation for this fine at.titude and consideration. <br /> <br />Sincerely <br /> <br /> The <br />Union and ordered filed: <br /> <br /> H. A. Hunt, Supt. of .Schodls~" <br />following resolution was received from the Portsmouth Ministerial <br /> <br />"We, the. Portsmouth Ministerial Union, in regular session, <br />this sixth day of January, 1946, do hereby express our hearty <br />approval of an appreciation to the Woman's Christian Temper- <br />ance Union of the City of Portsmouth for calling the attention <br />of the City Council to 'childreh going 'in and out of the ABC <br />stores. <br />We further express our approval and appreciation to the members <br />of the Bortsmouth City Council for the resolution passed and <br />forwarded to the S~ate ABC Control Board on the subject of Juve- <br />niles entering the ABC stores of the City.~ <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br />Committee on Norals & Social Service <br /> <br />T.A.Russell, Chairman, <br />Byon Jones, Secretary.'~ <br /> <br /> <br />
