~The Monogram Club of Woodrow Wilson High School, an organization of stu-
dents who have emrned their ~.~ in competitive athletics, for some months past has been con-
sidering the matter of a memorial to Maurice.Ro~er('~Buok)Childs, a student at Woodrow Wilson
High School, who died on September25th, 1943, as the result of injuries sustained in the
Wileon-Elizabeth City football game.
Various types of memorials have been considered and ~he Club is n~
agreed that a memorial flagpole with an ornamental base which could be used as the center of
pep meetings and other simi~la~ student get-together~ would be most su~able. It is proposed
to erect the memorial as an a~tractive feature of the playground practice field area nc~th
west of the High School Building, facing Queen St. Location details and architectural plans
would be submitted to the City Manager, the City Engineer and the Recreation Bureau for ap -
proval prior ~o construction. ~ ~
In addition, the Monogram Club is taking this opportunity ~o request the
formal designation of the practice field-playground area northwest of the Woodrow Wilson High
SchoolBuiIding, bounded by Queen $treet on the south, and by Fifth Aven e on the west as
'Roger Childs~ Field'. By~ such an action the entire area, now closely related to the~High School
and its athletic program, would become a "living memorial~' to our c ~l~ssm~te, who gave his
life for his Alma Mater.
In the event that the Council formally designates the area as 'Roger
Childs Field', that'fac~ will be suitably recognized on a bronze plaque ~o b~ provided as a
part of the base of the memorial flagpole.
