Commander Walter <br /> E. Hunley£who was stationed at the Coast Guard Reservation in Baltimore until sometime in De- <br /> cember. He was ordered to Port~smouth as Commanding Officer of the Buoy Yard 6n First Street. <br /> His car was tagged shortly after he returned. He immediately purc?~sed City license at half <br />- year rate, of which he wa~ entitled. <br /> B. A. Johnston, License Inspector." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> 13th ~In furtherance of our improved lighting program, we are plac- <br />ing fifty-eight lights in the Prentis Park and Prentis Place section. <br /> We believe this will increase the safety from a traffic and <br />pedestrian viewpoint." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> l~th ~In furtherance of your instructions, his Honor the Mayor and <br />Manager have contacted the Washington authorities and representatives relative $o reduction in <br />Navy Yard work, and I think it is appropriate at this time to adopt the attached~ resolution." <br /> <br />Resolution <br /> <br /> ~WHEPJEAS, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which is located in <br /> Portsmouth, Virginia, will undergo drastic cu~s in employ- <br />ment d~e to the termination of the War; the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth does hereby respectfully request that <br />the Naval Appropriations Committee of the Senate give due <br />and~lengthy consideration before reduction of appropria - <br />tion is made and, <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth recognizes and expects cer- <br /> ~tain reduction in the personnel, however, the Oouncit further <br /> feels that due to the excellent geographic location o~this <br /> Yard, which should serve as a leading work and repair base <br /> on the Atlantic Coast and, <br /> WHEREAS, it is felt that there is a certain obligation on <br /> th~ Federal Government's part to many workers who gave up <br /> positions, Jobs and homes in distant cities to come to the <br /> Navy Yard to work as their patti,tic du~ and that e~ery <br /> consideration should be given to ~hese persons before appro- <br /> priations are reduced, <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resalved by the Oouncil of the City <br /> of Portsmouth, Virginia, that on behalf of t~e Na~l Shipyard <br /> and its corps of excellent and capable workers~ that the appro- <br /> priation committee be urged to-freeze the workers in.the Yard <br /> at a reasonable limit not less than 12,000 ~nd be it further <br /> resolved that copies of this resolution be sent to the Chair- <br /> man of the Naval Affairs Committee of the Senate, the Secre <br /> tary of the Navy, certain members of the Senate and Congress, <br /> the Governor of Virginia and other interested persons, urging <br /> them to appeal to those in authority to aid in keeping the <br /> workers employed here at a high level. <br /> <br />Signed - Leslie T.
