Attached -
,Receipt is acknowledged of yotU~ letter of Way ~gth, relative to the
many complaints you h~.ve received regarding the soot and smoke from the ~aval Shipyard Power
Plant's stacks.
in the short time that I have been here, I have beccme aws~e of the
nuisance that this causes within and without the Shipyard. Some weeks ago action was ini -
tiated to obtain authority and funds for the undertaking of corrective measures. I am happy
to infoz~nyou that on ~ay ~gth, 19~, authority was received to proceed with these corrective
measures, and funds ~ade available with which to start construction. The~measu~es proposed
consist of the erection of a high chimney, and the installation of a seconda_~ydust collec or,
The present installation has mechanical collectors which remove up-
wards of 8~% of the ~st from the stack gases. ~ith the co~urpletion o f the improvements,v~
hope to effect a removal of approximately 98% of the dust from~e stack gases. This is well
above the usual 8~% requi~ed in the cities having anti-smoke ordinances.
It is hoped that the modification, as described above, willbe completed
sometime this Fall. In,he me~time, ~ i meas-o~es possible, with the present equipment, will
be undertaken t o reduce the nuisance to a minimum.
Very sincerely
D.H. Clark,~Rea~ A~miral
Commander.~
