This club is khown~ the Junior Optimist Boys~ Club and it's
more than 80 members attend the club regularly. Our success with these youngsters has been
rem~rkabie and very encouraging to the members of ou~ own club. During ~ae past year, w e have
spent Considerable money and'time in an effort to make this a complete Boys' Club and to of-
fer diversified sports, games, and other entertainment to attract these childmen and thereby
keep~them off the streets and out of the mischief that many of them had gotten into in the
p&st.. Certainly, this club is one of the finest contributions that is being made to combat
juvenile delinquency in our City. We recognize that the problem is not always w%th the boys
themselves., b~t in the main is a lack of good adult guidance and Sups~vlsion on the part of
the parents and others who come in contact vAth these men of tomorrow.
in the past fe%v months the Optimist Club of PortSmouth has installed
outside flo6d lights for night sports with the materials and labor furnished by the club
its members~ Ne als0 spent well over $500~00 for materials to install a regutationout-doo~
boxing ring, the labor fe~ ~onst~ction being f~nished through the Recreation Bureau of the
City of portsmouth. All the inside games and equipment including the ping-pong table and fur-
niture were furnished by the Senior Opthuist Club. Entertainment and refreshments are sup-
plied for these boys all during the year as well a s an ~nnual Christmas party and an affair
held in the fall at w_hi~n time the most outstanding and best liked boy of the Junior Club is
awarded a t~ophy for his display of good citizenship. He is selected by the Junior members
in a very democratic manner.
A night sup~vvisor is employed and paid by the Optimist Club and he is
on d~ty every evening except S~mudsv. This man was reco~ended to us by the Recreation Bureau
and we have fo-~md him to be very c~oable and understanding. He is assisted each evening by a
