Because of this' lack of facil-' ities~ we find that we have a very insanitary condition around the side and back of the club house. The b~ck of the club house faces Glasgow Street, and is only separated frou~the side walk by a wi~e fence. I am sure that you will agree with us that this is a most insanitary and unhealthful condition and a situation that certaLuly should not be allowed to continue to exist~ Running water is needed for d~inking pumpos es as well as for keeping the club house clean~ and this is an operation that has to be done nightly. Therefore, since the club house is the property of the City of Ports- mouth, and anything attache, d thereto would become the property of the City of Ports~outh, and in view of the enormous expenses that we have incurred in the operation of t!mis club d~ - ing the past year, as well as the additional appropriations that will be necesss_vy this spring ~ud e~mer, we respectfully reques~ that the City Cousacil appropriate immediately, sufficient money to provide an addition adjoining the east end of this b~ilding with a door co~Luecting the main building to the addition and that the said addition be equipped with two conmnodes, two urinals, at least one wash basin, ~nd one or r,~ore sho~ver heads. The s~n necessary would net be large and would certainly be well spent. it should n~b be overlooked that in operating this clu~; the Portsmouth Optimist Club is relieving the City of an expense that it would otherwise have. I w~ld like to call your attehtion also to the fact that the Boys' Club located on C~awford Street that is operated by the Recreation Bureau, is equipped with sb~ower and complete toilet facllitfe.~. The mer,~bers of the Optimist Club of Portsr~outh would be most happy t o co-opera~e in every way possible to get this much needed job done and A~ll furnish s_uy assfs-' tance that we may be called upon ~o render.
