On motion of I~r. Howard, the following resolution was adopted: <br /> <br />W~REAS, vhe ~ttantmc ~nd Danville Ra~_lway Company has oetitisned the <br />Stave Corporatmon Commission for permission zo discontin-~e t~ains No. <br />3 and 4, bet~een Portsmouth and Danville, Virginia, amd <br /> ~£HEREAS, the discontinuance of these trains would seriously handicap <br /> shipments of sea foods a_nd o ther~ perishable commodities by express <br /> to points along this line, and <br /> V~_-EREAS, it would remove the only passenger service between Portsmouth <br /> Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, and all invermediate points, <br /> BE iT RESOL~ED a~y THE CITY COD~CiL 0F PORTSMOUTH,, ViRGINT_A~, that we <br /> vigorously request the State Corporation Commission to deny ,the <br /> quest to remove these ,trains." <br /> <br /> Motion o f Mr. Howard that proper officers of ~he City appear before the <br />State ~orporavlon Con~nission in b ehal~ of ou_~ resolution, w as a~opted. <br /> <br /> 5th - The City L~anager presented the fol~lowing letter from the City <br /> Electrical inspector, which was ordered filed: <br /> <br /> ~[entioned at the April 12th meeting of the City 0ouncil were three <br />new street lig~ats for installation at ~the following corner, s: <br /> Chestnut mua Palmer Sts. <br /> Chestnut a~ud Henry Sts. <br /> Sherwood and Clifford Sts, <br /> The first named light was ordered installed on December 12th, 1947.De- <br />lay in the installation is for the s.ame reason %hat befell the Prentis Park job of fifty three <br />lights, inasmuch as this location is on the same circuits that supply the Prentis Park area. <br />However, I am glad to say that the Prentis Park job is now well underway and going forward. <br />~The Chestnut and Palmer St. light will be installed just as soon as the V.E.P. gets to that <br />section of the work. %~ne latter two lights, as mentioned above, have been ordered and it is <br />expected that they will be installed in the next few weeks." <br /> <br />dent <br /> <br />made <br /> <br /> 8th The ~ ' '~ <br /> - ~anage~ presented the lc!lowing letter front he Superinten- <br />of Electrical Department: <br /> <br /> ~As requested by City Oo~uacil at its last meeting, a survey has been <br /> of ~cadia Heights and North Tr~mton ~n reference to street lighting. <br /> At present there are four street li~mts in Arcadia Heights proper, <br />T~o lights occur om ArcaS~a St. ~ud two on ~agnolia St. These blocks are of double length~ In <br />order that the proposed lighting may be on a par with that in other sections of ~ne City,five <br />new street lights are being recommended, in the total follo~ng, for t_bis section~ <br /> North Truxton extends to the north a nd to the east of Arcadia Seights, <br />This section has no street lmg_~s at present and ~s well built up with homes for colore~ people <br />Seventeen new ~treet lights are proposed for this area. <br /> <br />Locations for New St~e.~Ligh~ <br /> <br />~ag~aoiia St. midway between Gosport Hd. and Allen ~ve. The mark- <br />ers and signs are of reflectorized material which makes th e~ plainly visible at night. They a~ <br />quite an improvement over the old type and should prove a ~raat conve~lienee to the str~nagers <br />coming into the City during the approaching sommuer months. <br /> <br /> 8th - The Ma~nager presented the following letter from t he City ~ngi- <br />neer~ <br /> '~Heference is made to the land adjoining the Sewage Treatment Plant <br />that we were authorized to mak~ an offer of ~,&O0.O0 for. This land comprises 18 lots~ ~$~ <br />x 100' each, n~o~nbered 8S to 80 inclusive, as sno~ on the map of Pinners Point, belonging to <br />the South Point Realty Company, <br /> <br /> <br />
