~We, the property owners and all adult residents of the area from t~
stadium ont he north side of Queen Street to Fifth Avenue; on t he east side of Fifth Avenue
from Queen Street to Glasgow Street, and on the south side of Glasgow Street from Fifth Avenue
to the stadium, a~e bitterly opposed to the construction o f a high school on this site for the
following reasons:

1, Such construction would result in~ae dest~mction of our 30
homes, which house a total of fifty f~mities consisting of
106 adults and 42 children.
2. The housing facilities.in Portsmouth, Norfolk and the adja-
cent territories are so serious (and growing worse) that
homes could not be obtained f~ the proper housing of people
who would be displaced.
3.~e cost of the site would ~ entirely too great for the site
'o~ a hi~ schoOl. ~e estimate the cost to be between $2~5,000.00
ss0~d $B50~000.00.

~e believe that the children o f Portsmouth should be provided with
all of the facilities and equipment which the taxpayers can afford and we also believe that the
proposed high ~ehool can be constructed on. some site which would not mesh such a ha~d.s~ip among
so many people. In this connection, we would be pleased to co-ordinate our efforts wmth thosef
of the school board and of the City Co~cil. ~
We respectfully request that the City Council reject ~ud return to
the School Board their recommendations that the City of ~ortsmo~h release to the School Board
such ~ropertyownedby the City of Portsmouth for the construction of a high school within the
area referred ~o in the foregoing, for the reasons stated.
"Although ~ have personally thar~ed Chief Sykes and several of his
and thorough care, the home of the late ~. Joseph Griee at $18 North Street at 818 North St.
would have suffered irreparable damage. For your remarkable action and foresight in preventing
and controlling damage to the furnishings, you firemen are to be cited, as well as for your
bravery in determining at once that the home was ~mmoccupied at the time of the conflagration.
Portsmouth may well be proudof its outstanding Fire Department
my thar~ks to those who were of such tremendous aid to me on J~uue *th can not be overemphasized.
