~At a special meeting, called by the Ministers~ Fo~m of Portsmouth
and vicinity, a certain p~ase of't -'
he proposed new N~gro H~gh School for the use of Ports-
mouth was taken under a dv~sement~ n~ely: the seating c~acity of-the auditorium. The
FORUMwas highly pleased with the wonderful progress already made, and extended ti~0~nks
and much~appreciation fo~ it. However, ther~ was some question in our minds as to the
size of the auditorium~ While it is proposed to have a seating capacity of lO~, w e a~e
of the opinion that the seating capacity of 1500 would be more nearly adequate~
Our commencement ~udiences a~e now so lamge that much space is needed,
and with a rapidly g~owing city, such as ours, still l a~er space will b e needed as the
years g~ by. The churches have in the past, furnished a p~ace for ~the academi~ exercises
of the.~igh School, and but for that there ~ould have been no place adequate xor the same.
The ministerial f raternity~ of ~he City feels tP~t the City might be
favorably inclined to ~ive consideration to the idea of increasing the capacity/of the High
School auditorium because there would be ~o place in the Qity adequate for large gather-
ings such as school closings and so on. ~e li~e to bring outstanding organimations of sta~
and ~tional caliber to oUr City, and an adequate auditorium would make this course pos-
