<br /> Mr. %~ilson, representing the Committee appointed for said ~rpose at the last meet-
<br />lng of the City Council, presented the following resolution:
<br />
<br />'WHEP~EAS, ~A~mighty God, in His divine wisdom, hath seen fit
<br />to remove from our midst Dr. Lonsdale J. Roper, who departed
<br />this life on Taesday, J~ne t2th, 1951,' and
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Roper, throu~ years of conscientious and faith-
<br />,ful endeavor, contributed greatly to the development and efficiency
<br />of our local Health Department, having become Portsmouth' s first full-
<br />time Health Director, in 1919, remaLuing in this position until he
<br />became a Director of the State Health Department in 1937, where he
<br />served with distinction until the time of his death, ~nd
<br /> WHEREAS, his~private life was charasterized by sympathy, kindness,
<br />love and fidelity, ~ich virtues endeared him not only to his fsmily
<br />but to all who knew him, and
<br /> WHEREAS, we, the members of the Portsmouth City Council wish to
<br />express our appreciation of the qualities e~xempiified in the life of
<br />Dr. Roper,
<br /> THEREFORE, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Portsmouth,
<br />Virginia, in meeting assembled en this 26th day of June, 1951, that
<br />we express our sincere sorrow in the loss to this his native city
<br />and to our State, of so worthy a friend and public official, and
<br /> BE IT FURTH_ ~-~R RESOLVED, that a copy of these resolutions be spread
<br />upon the miau tee of the City Co~uci~, a co~ forwarded to the family
<br />and copies be given to the daily papers.
