July lOth~ 1951. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. ~eise~an bhat the City kttorney be authorized to draw an ord~_nance for au <br />election bo be held on the first Tuesday in Nove~mer~1951, was adopted. <br /> <br />6th- "I submit the attached resolution and recommend its adoption." <br /> <br />'5~hereas, the Council of the City of Portsmouth desires to acquire for the use of the <br />City, a parcel of land containing ll,O~O square feet suitable for the erection of a <br />bull ~ding near the City stables and incinerator near P~ue and GriffLu Streets, and to <br />exchange therefor the following land no% used or necessary for the public purposes of <br />the City, namely: that certain lot of land described as follows: Beg~_~mD~ug at a <br />point distant 30 feet east of the east side of Pine Street as shown on Tabb's land <br />and ~3 feet sout~ from the south side of Cl~ford Street, and thence south, parallel <br />~lth Piue Street, 30 feet; thence east 90 feet; thence north 30 feet, and thence west <br />90 feet to the beg~-~uing; <br /> <br />Therefore, Be it P~esolved by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, that the City Man- <br />ager of the City be and he is hereby directed %o receive after first giving ten days <br />notice by advertisement in the Portsmouth Star, a daily newspaper, seated proposals <br />for the exchar~e of the above described parcel of land for a parcel of land in the <br />nearby vicinity containing not less that. ll,O~O square feet, and to be conveyed in fee <br />simple, free of lien~." <br /> <br />On motion of F~. ~arren, the resolution was-adopted. <br /> <br /> 7th - "I submit the attached letter from Charles L. Reynolds making an offer for certad <br />city lots and recommend that it be given, your consideration." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Howard to refer to the same committee appointed to investigate the matter <br />~th the Atlantic Coast Line Pmilroad, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 8th - "I attach hereto a letter from W.F. Smith, Urban Engiueer of the Department of <br />Hig~ays, concerning the completion of the east approach to Churehland Bridge within the City of Portsmouth. <br /> I recommend that the City concur ~-u the proposal of the Department of <br /> <br /> Motion of ¥~. Ho~rd that the City Manager be authorized to proceed with the completion <br />of the east approach to the Churcbiland Bridge, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 9th - "I submit a resolution from the Portsmouth Chamber of Con~r~erce end recommend that <br />the City Council give this matter serious consideration." <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, the Civic Affairs Committee of the Portsmouth Chamber <br /> of Commerce has been urging the construction of concrete side- <br /> walks on portions of High Street not mow paved, and <br /> I~HERE~, certain other sections of the City are in dire need of <br /> sidewalk construction to protect the health and reduce hazards of <br /> pedestrians, aud <br /> ~IE. REkS, it was the unanimous opinion of our committee that the <br />Portsmouth City Council continue to co-operate in this project, <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE iT P~ESOLVED TK&T THE Board of Directors <br />of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce of Portsmouth, Virginia, urges <br />the Portsmouth City Council to take advantage of State enabling leg- <br />islationbyadopting an Ordinence whereby abuttLug property o%~ers <br />may be assessed for the cost of sidewalk construction. <br /> Adopted by the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Chamber of <br />Commerce, Portsmouth, Virginia, at a regular meet~ug held on June <br />2Oth, 1951. <br /> Respecti~]]Y submitted, <br /> <br />Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, <br /> E. Allen, President." <br /> <br />On motion filed. <br /> <br /> 10th - "I submit a resolution from bhe Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce concerning the <br />fluoridation of the City water system." <br /> <br />Resolution - <br /> <br />'~gHEREAS, the Civic Affairs Committee of the Portsmouth Chamber of <br />Commerce has unanimously agreed that the fluoridation of the water <br />system of the City of Portsmouth ~ll protect the heslth of our <br />citizens and is in the p~olin ~terest, and <br /> WHEP~AS,-various state, national end local health, medical and <br />dental associations and societies, both public and private, have <br />approved such a program, <br /> NOW, THERE~FORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board o£Directors of the <br />Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce of Portsmuuth, Virginia urge the Ports- <br />mouth City Council to fluoridate its .~ter system to prevent tooth <br />decay~ and pro~ect the public health and welfare of our citizens. <br /> Adopted by the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Chamber of <br />Commerce, Virginia, at a re~3/ar meeting held on June 26, 1951. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />Portsmouth Ch~mher of Co~erce, <br /> <br />E.
