This discussion would be <br /> with youth from~various parts of the city. Other matters may be brought to the <br /> floor also. ~e would appreciate an ~nswer within the week. Holladay Mitchell, for your information." <br /> <br /> Attached - <br /> "I wish to con~v~end the Portsmouth Fire Department, Chief ~ykes and his men, to your most <br />worthy attention and that of the City Council, for their many services skillfully given to all people of this <br />city; for their willingness and readiness at all times ~o insure and maintain the safety of our property and <br />our lives. I speak from personal knowledge as the foll~-ing copy of my letter to M~r.~.B. Sykes, Fire M~rshall, <br />endeavors to reveal: <br /> Dear Sir: <br /> A year ago last October, my aunt died and I never have %~itten <br /> ~o thank you and the men ~u your department for their prompt and <br /> adept aid to her in her last illness. My aunt was ~Liss ~ildred <br /> Maupin Holladay and I do now want to thauk you and trust you will convey <br /> my deep appreciation and gratitude to yourm~n, parti~alarly to those men <br /> of the Pulmotor squad, belated as this letter is. <br /> Having observed the Portsmouth Fire Department in action on eeveral <br /> occasions, it is not idle praise that I say, I am proud of it 'ander <br /> your administration and the men who are ever ready to give quick and <br /> effioient service to any and every citizen in need. <br /> Personally, I have experienced comfort in the case of my aunt from <br /> your men (one of two of whom she had taught in school) and have se~u <br /> their kindness, consideration and faithfulness in the face of death; <br /> for this I again thaD/{ you and your men." <br /> <br /> 7th - "I recommend that an appropriation of $300,000.00 from the Utility Tax Fund to <br />th~ BuildLug Fund of the new Norcom High Sdhool, be placed on its first reading." <br /> <br /> Motion~of l~r. Weisemau to place an appropriation of $300,000.00 from Utility Tax Fund <br />for said purpose on its first reading, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 8th - "I reconvaend that an appropriation of $6~0.00 be placed on its first reading, to <br />defray the City's share of the cost of intervention ~u the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Rate Case computed <br />at the rate of .8 of .O1 per capita." <br /> <br /> Motion of lit. Bilisoly to place an appropriation of $6&O.00 for said purpose on its <br />first reading, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 9th - "i recommend that an appropriation in b~e sum of $2,000,00 be placed on its <br />first reading for the purpose of defraying the City of Portsmouth's portion of the cost of a visit to the Tide- <br />water area by members of the General Asse~ly~of Virgiuia.,~ ' <br /> <br /> ~ Motion o f Mr. HoughtOn ~o place an ~propriation of $2,000.00 for said purpose on its <br />first reading~ v~s adopted. <br /> <br /> 10th - "I submit th~ attached letter from Davenport-Lewis Chevrolet Corporation, con- <br />cerning the rental conthact for the old fire house building located on the corner of Glasgow and EffinghamSts., <br />also a letter £rom Councilman R. Irvine Smith, conc~rn~nE~the disposition of thebuilding. <br /> I have inspected the building and recommend that it be repaired aud remodeled <br />to ~ro~rlde office spac~ for one or more departments of City'Government and that the City Manager be authorized <br />end directed to employ an architect to prepare plans and estimate of cost of the project." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Smith to concur in the reco~endation of the City Manager was adopted. <br /> <br />supply. <br /> <br />llth "I submit the + ' <br /> - a~tacned letters relative to fluoridation of th~ City' s water <br /> <br /> Motion of M~r. H~vard that the question of fluoridation of the City's water supply be <br />taken from the table and presented at the Council meeting on February 12th, 1952, and that the City Manager re- <br />quest representatives of the Dental end Medical Associations to'be present at that meeting was adored. <br /> <br />12th - ~'I submit the attached resolution and rec~nend its adoption." <br /> <br />Resolution - "Whereas~ the Council of the City of Portsmouth is desirous that <br /> th& Portsmouth T~ansit Company and l its amployeesw~]] reach ~a agreement <br /> over the matters ~ controversy between them~ and the members of the Council <br /> are of the opinion that~e continued operation of the bus transportation <br /> service rendered by the Pbrtsmouth Trausit Company is necessary and essen- <br /> tial to the welfare, health and safety of the inhabitants of the City, and to <br /> car~y on the defense work undert~kenbythe United States Naval authorities <br /> in this area. <br /> Now, Therefore, Befit Resolved by the Council of the City of <br /> Portsmouth, Virginia/that in the event the Portsmouth Trsnsit Company and <br /> <br /> <br />
