ment plan for the City employees. I suggest that the matter be referred to the Committee c~nsidering the plans.'

Attached -
'He have completed the cost calcuations for the general employees of the City of Ports-
mouth, and shall have your report to you in the next couple of weeks.
As an aid to us in our calculation of costs for the police retirement plan, I shall ap
preciate it if you will give us a general discussion cf-your practices of retirement. More specifically, what do
you want in the way of a normal retirement age for firemen and policemen? Most public employee retirement plans
call ~Or an earlier retirement age for, foremen and policemen than for other employees, but the cost is greatly
increased by doing this. Do you think we can get by with a retirement age of 65? Provision would of course be
made for early retirement with an actuarial reduction of the benefit and if you desire it, for disability retire-
ment. In connection with disability retirement, do you favor special consideration for those firemen mud police-
men disabled in line of duty over ordinary disabilities?
Ia connection with these considerations, we would be very glad to have a copy of the or-
dinance establishing the police retirement benefits, and at the same time, a copy of the repealed ordinance for
general employees. I suppose that you have repealed this ordinance by this time. We can also give yeu a more
complete picture of the cost of your retirement program for both general employees and firemen and policemen
ifyou will give~ the data on presently retired employees. Kind regards;"
