$70 <br /> <br />June 2~th. !952. <br /> <br /> The following letter from the City Attorney was read: <br /> <br /> "This is to inform you that the purchase price of the property recently sold'by <br />the City to Charles L. Reynolds and Human Cooper was collected and the money was credited by the City Collector <br />as follows: <br /> Of the sum of Four Hundred and Fifty Dollars collected from Charles L. Reynolds <br />the sum of $435.07 was cre~ted to the payment of taxes assessed against Adella ii. Page for the years 1935 to 19d( <br />and the bals~uce of $14.95 to the sale of property. <br />Of the sum of Four Hundred and Sixty-five Dollars collected from Hyman Cooper, <br />the sum of $317o88 was credited to the payment of taxes for the years 1955 to 19~6, and the balance to one-half <br /> of the taxes which may hav~ been assessed since that time and to the sale of property. In addition to the above <br />sum, Hyman Cooper paid the sum of $517.76 for one half of the taxes assessed on the land purchased by him in the <br />name of Walter H. Taylor, 5rd, et als, for the years 1933 to 19~6 iuclusive, and the further sum of $67.50 for <br />taxes on the land which should have been assessed against Walter H. Taylor, 5rd,~ for the years 1946 to 1952, in - <br />clusive. All taxes on the land are paid through 1952." <br /> <br />On motion filed. <br /> <br />The following letter from the City Attorney was read: <br /> <br /> "In.rsference to the attached request from the Church of God for the relief of tax- <br />~es, I find that the ]aud assessed to Tina L. Anderson for the year 19~5 and to the Trustees of the Church of <br /> God for the years 1946 to 1952, inclusive, as lots 259 and 260, south side of~ilcox~ Avenue, was conveyed by <br /> ~s. Anderson to R.G. Bohler and others, Trustees of the Church of God by deed dated December 6, 194~. Shortly <br /> after the l~ud was purchased bythe Church, a buildLugwas erected thereon which has an outside appearance of a <br /> dwelling but on the inside there is ~u auditorium with benches and is used for church purposes. The property was <br /> erroneously assessed and taxes should be relieved as follows: <br /> <br />On lot 259 the sum of $2.50 per year for the years 1945 to 1952, inclusive, and <br />On lot 260, the sum o~ $3.76 for each pf the same years, with interest ~d~ pen- <br /> <br />alties." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Grimes that the City Collector be relieved of the collection of <br />taxes and that the City Auditor be authorized to remove same from his books,was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter from Y~s. W.B. Sykes was read: <br /> <br /> ~'My husband, William B. Sykes, who was Chief of the Fire Department for your City <br />died suddenly on Febrnary llth, 1952, after having served our City as a fireman for over forty years. While so <br />employed, he paid into the Pensio~ System the sum~of Five Hundred and Thirteen ($515.00) Dollars, which was de- <br />ducted from his salary. I have made application to Mr. Aubrey Johnson, City Auditor~ for the refu_ud of the money <br />that was deducted from my late husband's salary. Mr. Johnson informed me that the City wo~ld refund. One-half of <br />the said monies. I am asking that, in view of my financial circumstances and the faithful service rendered by Ey <br />late husband, as well a s the fact that I have no income whatsoever, that I be given the entire amount. I have be~ <br />told by some of my friends that you could do this under Section 19-? of the City Code." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Sturtevant that a refund of all monies which can legally be granted <br />be made to M~s. W.B. Sykes, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter from the Superintendent of Schools was read: <br /> <br /> "I hereby notify you that the terms of office of the following members of the <br />School Board expire on July l, 1952: <br /> First District - ~s. W. B. Spong <br /> Second District - Mr. M.E. Gol~an <br /> Third District - Mr. Har~y H. Harcum." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. How&wd to go into the election of members of the School Board, was <br /> <br />adopted. <br /> <br />Mr. Sturtevant nominated Mrs. W.B. Spong from the First District <br /> <br />Mr. Grimes nominatedH. H. Harcum from the ~nird District. <br /> <br /> Motion of ~. Howard to defer the election of a member of the Second District <br />until %he next meeting was adopted. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. ~eiseman that nominations be closed was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Spong was elected from the First District and Mr. Harc-~m from the Third <br />District, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Bilisoly, Grimes, Howard, Smith, Sturtevant~ Warren, ~eiseman, Wilson <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />The following letter from the Humane Society was re~d and filed: <br /> <br /> "The Portsmouth Humane Society in a previgus letter to your group endorsed <br />unanimously the provision for Rabies Vaccination Ordinance at that t~me under consideration. We reserved the <br />condition that such an ordinance passed should embody in it provisions for_ Rabies Clinics. <br /> At the same time as you were considering an Ordinance for the City of Portsmout <br />NorfoLk County Board of Supervisors were considering a similar ordinance for ~orfolk County. Arg.~ments presented <br />before the County group at their public discussion on the ordinance caused theBoard of Directors of the Humane <br />Society to reconsider its pre'~ous stand in support of a blanket Rabies Vaccination Ordinance. <br /> It was generally felt that such an ordinance did not answer the need in attem~ <br /> <br /> <br />
