WP~P~EAS, the Highway Commission ~as recently seen fit to move the toll gate from the
<br />James River Bridge to a point at the norbhern approach to the bridge which affords
<br />a much more convenient and less hazardous system of cellecting tolls.
<br />
<br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT_ RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA:
<br />
<br />1. That the Highway Commission be requested to remove the toll gates and collec-
<br /> tion of tolls from the Crittenden Bridge and the Nansemond Bridge of the James
<br /> River Bridge System.
<br />2. That no reduction be made in the charge for tells over the bridges on Route
<br /> 17 between Route 58 and Route 60 but that the toll that is now being charged
<br /> be collected at the toll gate located at ~the northern approach to the James
<br /> River Bridge~.
<br />3. That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the CoUncil of
<br /> the City of Portsmouth aUd a Certified copy be forWarded to General James A.
<br /> Anderson, State Highway Commissioner."

<br />On motion of Mr. Howard, said resolution was adopted.

<br /> 6th - "I submit'the attached letter from W. Marshall King, Commissioner of the State
<br />Corporation Commission concerning a public hearing in Richmond at lO:O0 A.M., on July 28th regarding the rout-
<br />lng of buses between Newport News, Portsmouth andNorfolk, making ~onnection with the Chesapeake and OhioRailway
<br />Company in Newport News."

<br /> Motion of Mr. Howard that the City Mauager be authorizedto attend the hearing in
<br />Richmond on July 28th was adopted.

<br /> 7th - "I recommend that George F. Matthews, Superintendent of Electrical Department
<br />be placed on the Retirement list of the ~nployees o~ the City of Portsmouth, as of July l, 1952 and thathis re-
<br />tirement ~y be fixed at the sum of $2,&30.00 annually, representing one-half of his present salary. Mr. Matthews
<br />health is such that ~u my opinion it will be to the advantage of all concerned to place him on retirement at thi~
<br />time."
