C~y Collector be relieved of collecting the <br />Motion of Mr. Bilisoly that the ~ <br /> <br />~th - "I submit the attached resolution and reco~nend its adoption." <br /> <br />"Resolution - <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION WITH REGARD TO THE PROPCSED BRIDGE AND ~JNNEL PROJECT <br />CONNECTING N~WPOET kr~S, PORTS~IOUTH AND NOPd~OLK ViA 38th STREET IN <br />NOHFOLK AND CRA~Y ISLAND P~DUTE: <br /> <br />WP~AS, iu recent years passenger and motor traffic has increased in <br />the Hampton Roads area to such an extent that the present facilities <br />for handling this traffic is inadequate, ~nd <br />WHEREAS, many new industries and new and enlarged defense establishments <br />are now operating in this area dna others are considering locating here, <br />and <br />~.~rEREAS, the population of the area is well over 600,000 people and is <br />increasing rapidly, and <br />WHEREAS, considerable length of time will be required in planning and <br />constructing Bridge and Tunnel facilities between the Tidewater conmmnities <br />of Newport News, Portsmouth and Norfolk and the adjacent communities during <br />which time the present crowded cofldition will be aggravated by continued <br />gro%%h and expausion of the area. <br /> NfN TH~.REFORE BE IT BESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOU~{, that <br /> <br /> Sectica I. That the City Council of Portsmouth concur in the action of <br /> the individual citizens and the local political subdivisions, the Na~y, <br /> Army and other units of the Federal Government and all others who have <br /> participated in the effort ~o bring about better facilities for relieving <br /> the traffic congestion in this area. <br /> Section II. That the City Council of Portsmouth concur in the action al- <br /> ready taken by the State Highway Commission and earnestly recommends that <br /> the Highway Commission continue its efforts to the exten~ of completing <br /> the entire project which when completed will connect the Peninsula with <br /> the other sections of Tidewater and will afford easy over-the-road travel <br /> for all of the citizens of the State as well as our thousands of visitors <br /> each year. <br /> Section III. That the Council of the City of Portsmouth offer its full <br /> co-operation and efforts in any way it may be helpful in achieving the ends <br /> herein petitioned. <br /> Section IV. That the City Clerk is directed to transm&t a copy of this <br /> Resolution to the State Highway Commission and to the proper authorities <br /> representing the Federal State and local Governments interested in the <br /> pro j act." <br /> <br />On. motion o f Mr. Howard, said resolution was~dopted. <br /> <br />Resolution - <br /> <br />5th - "I submit the attached resolution and reconmaend its adoption." <br /> <br />.RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE REMbV~L OF TOLL COLLECTION FROM THE CRITTENDEN <br />AND NANS~MOND BRIDGES OF THE JkMES RIVER BRIDGE SYSTE~. <br /> <br />~HEREAS, there are three toll brid~es viz: the Crittenden Bbidge, the Nanse- <br />mond Bridge and the James River BridEe located on Route 17 between U.S. <br />Route 58 and U.S. Route 60 and~ <br />~gHEEEAS, most of the vehicular traffic using said Route pass over all three <br />bridges and are required to stop and purchase fare or stop and show tickets <br />to bridge tender on each of the three bridges which consumes much time of <br />the %raveling public as well as ad ~ding considerable cost to the operation~ <br />of the bridge facilities and, <br /> <br /> <br />
