<br />Commission and recommend thar it he adopted. ~This is just a verification of a former action of Council in the
<br />form of a resolution.'~

<br />"A RESOLUTION TO REQUEST TIKE MEMBERS OF TRE VIRGINIA STATE HIGHWAY CO~MISStONERS
<br />TO APPROVE THE NORTH-SOUTH ROUTE (ROUTE 2) FOR THE PROPOSED BRIDGE-TUNNEL
<br />CROSSING OF CPIESAPEAKE BAY
<br />
<br /> THAT WHEREAS, on the 25th day of July, 1957, a majority of the members of
<br /> the Chesapeake Bay Ferry Commission passed a Resolution adopting the NORTH-
<br /> SOUTH ROUTE (RObiE 2) for the proposed-bridge-tunnel crossing of Chesapeake
<br /> Bay and
<br /> THAT WHEREAS, this Resolution was adopted after a study hy the Commission et
<br /> the Preliminary Engineering Report prepared by SVERDRUPT & PARCEL, CONSULTING
<br /> ENGINEERS, St. Louis, Missouri, and the TRAFFIC REPORT prepared by WILBUR SMITH
<br /> AND ASSOCIATES COMPANY, the relative merits of the various routes, determined
<br /> that the NORTH-SOUTH ROUTE (ROUTE 2) is the most feasible and practicable.
<br /> BE ST ~HEREFORE RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia,
<br /> that this body go on record as approving the NORTH-SOUTH ROUTE (ROUTE 2) and
<br /> that a duly attested copy of this RESOLUTION be forwarded zo General James A.
<br /> Anderson, Chairman, State Highway Commission, Richmond, Virginia, by the City
<br /> Clerk."

<br />operation of the Off-Street parking lot and fixing the fees to be charged for parking meters. This ia for your
<br />consideration and will be presented at the next regular meeting of Council for placing on first reading."

<br />16,000 copies of the Armed Forces Week folders be paid from the appropriatio~ in the City Budge~."

<br /> 57-301 - "It is in order to take from the table the ma~er recommended a~ a former mee~-
<br />lng of Council t~ pay to the Virgimia Travel Counc~ the sum of $500.00 for distributing more th~ 50,000 folder~
<br />throughout the entire eastern Bection et ~nite~ States over the territory in which the Travel Council operates.
<br />This is ~o be paid for from the Budget item for the developmen~ of the City industrially and otherwise and I so
<br />recommend."

<br /> 57-302 - THe City Manager presented the £ollowing letter from Harvey N. Johnson,Jr.:

<br /> "On Tuesda~, May 14th, 1957, I appea~ed before the City Council as spokesman for an Emer-
<br />gency Citizens' Committee, presented a petition bearing several hundred signatures, and made plea before the
<br />Hon. City Council requesting ~se of the City's good offices to can~$ the former Carver HomesCommunity Building,
<br />~w the property of the Beazley Po~%dation, to be made available ~o the l~ortsmouth School Board for Eemporary
<br />use ss a public school facility.
<br /> In- immediate response to our plea, the City Council voted to -authorize a joint meeting with
<br />t~e School Board at an early date to-discuss this ma~er. Mi-nutes of the~May 27th, 1957 meeting of City Council
<br />include a reporz that the joint meeting could no~ be-h~id.until f~-e month of Junei 1957.
<br /> Having been informed by your offiee that no meeting has been held as of this date (August
<br />22, 1957) and that nothing further has been done with reference to our request, we now respectfully ask to be in-
<br />cluded en your agenda for the nex~ meeting of the City Council which is scheduled for Tuesday, Augus~ 27th, 1957
<br />at which time we ask to be heard further in this.matter."

<br />Citizens Committee for use of the Beazley proper~y for temporary school.

<br />School Board as soon as possible, was adopted.
