April 22nd~ 1958.

on the corner:
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED: That the Rector and Vestry of Trinity Episcopal
Church respectfully request the Council of the City of Portsmouth zo take
such action as may he-necessary to change the present bus stop to the south-
east corner of Court and High Streets, using t~e p~esen~ bus s~op at King
and Court for those buses turning down Court at the High St. intersection."

Motion of Mr. Weiseman to refer rs the City Manager for s repor~ ar the next Council

meeting~ was adopted.

58-138 - The following letter from Pilzer's Department Store was read:

"We do respectfully request that the section of Chestnut St. between High and
London Sts. he opened for two-way traffic rather than as it is a~ present
south, one way.
The reasons for this are as follows:
1. Traffic is continually going into the stree~ against the one-way signs.
2. We operate parking facilities on the corner of Queen and Chestnut Sts.
and it is very difficult ~o reach the lot from High St. As the City did
not have to go ~o ~ large investment and loss of Taxes for these facilities,
we feel that the city should co-operaTe with us in this case.
3. Since the one-way South has been instituted, total parking is off about
50%. This is below the point that we can operate. Parking is provided, by
the tenant for all businesses in the area and it is doubtful how long he can
operate without this change in the traffic regulation.
Thanking you in advance for your co-operatinn, we remain -
Pilzer~s Department Store."

~Motion of Mr. Baker to refer to the City Manager for investigation and report a~ the
next Council meeting, was adopted.

55-139 - The following letter from the Interdenominational Ministers' Forum of Ports~
mouth ~and vicinity in its regular meeting today took note of the fact that Dr. Hugo Owens and Dr James W Holly III
have requested that the facilities of the Portsmouth Public Library be made available to all the citizens of
Portsmouth.
We wish ~o go on record heartily endorsing and supporting this request. We
respectfully pray that the Council in its meeting on Tuesday nex~ will vote~o~make the facilities of the Pores-
mouth Public Library available ~o all the ~itizens, regardless of race, creed or colorj
(Signed) Walter L. This project has 136 ~amilies and is located a~ the west end of Glasgow Street. The
Waterview bus served our needs before the schedule was ~changed.
There are so many of us that depend on the bus to get ~o and from our jobs. Also,
mothers with smal~ children have zo walk several blocks to High St. to get a bus to do their shopping in the
downtown area. It is almost impossible for these little tots to walk that distance. Anything that can be done to
help will certainly he appreciated by all of the people in this project. :We are inclosing a petition.

(Signed Louise Wilson, Office Clerk."

This matter was referred to the conference with the Transit Company officials.

58-141 - "We, the undersigned, hereby petition the City Council for curbs and gut-
ters on Sycamore Road in the Glensheatlah section of Portsmouth.

(Signed) Seymour Levinson, 417 Sycamore Road
and others."

On motion filed.

58-142 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Theatre Association was read:

"Please refer ~o our letter of January 24,'1958, addressed ~o I.G.Vass, City
Manager~ in which we reques~ certain action by the City Council. ~ ~
Item number one requests action on the ~ax on theatre admissions. Item number two
requests an adjus~men~ on theatre license taxes to conform with those license taxes paid by other businesses.
Item two also requeszs that the adjustment take effect with the license ~axes due May 1, 1958.
Since a~ this late date we have not been notified of any action taken, especially
om the license tax adjustment, and since April 22, 1958 is the last Council meeting before May l, 1958, we
hereby request ~hat the matter be presented ~o Council a~ its meeting of April 22, 195S for immediate action.
Any postponement would exclude a possible adjustment in license ~axes next due."

Motion of Mr. Baker rs suspend the rules to hear from Mr. Soroko and any other
interested panties, was adopted.

PLr.
