"At their Oct. 5th meeting, the Executive Board of John Tyler PTA voted re express ~o you their opinion~conceruing the.sale of beer or shy alcoholic beverages at the Portsmouth Stadium. They fee] it would be most undesirable. The adults who are sincerely interested in the welfare of .the youth of Portsmouth are appalled at the~idea of exposing you to, or~'endouraging them in, the u~e~'6~ beer. The persons allowing any alcoholic beverage ~o be sold at the Portsmouth stadium, where the key interests of the majority of our youth lay are gzving theiT~appr6val'~-the'~se-'of thi~=beverage. Motion of Mr, Weiseman to refer re the City Attorney was adopted. 602334~-' The following resolutions from the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce and Ports- mouth Chamber of Commerce were read: "WHEREAS, it is apparent to the Board~Of Directors of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, that lh~ growth of 'Eistern Virginia, and especially the ares in and surrounding the cities of Norfolk and Port~mouth, has and will, in the future, produce ever-increasing traffic problems which will require the development of new and more adequate traffic arteries, suchas'the Second Elizabeth River Tunnel now being constructed, and WHERE~S, the construction of said Second Elizabeth River Tunnel will, in itself, develgP new traffic~in the area of the Western Branch of said Elizabeth River to ehe end that, in the opinion of said Board of Directors, a replace - merit of the 'now old ~d i~adequate bridge across said Western Branch of the Elizabeth River from Porf Norfolk 'in 'th~ City of Pdrtsmouth to West Norfolk in Norfolk,County will be urgently needed at, or shortly following, the opening of'said Second Tunnel facility~ NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Norfolk Chemher of Commerce heartily com~nds the action ~taken by the governing bodies of the City of Norfolk, the City of Portsmouth and Norfolk County requesting the Virginia Department of Highways to proceed promptly with the surveying and planning for tke donstruction of an improved modern bridge on State Highway Route No. 654, at or near the mouth of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, to the end that the ever-increasing vehicular traffic in this area be properly served with the resulting beneficial development and economic wellbeing of the whole community and its environs, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the State HighwayCommission, the Elizabeth River Tunnel Commission, the Board of Supervisors of the County of Norfolk, and the City Councils o~the City of Norfolk and the City of Portsmouth, respectively." "WHEREAS, it is apparent to the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, that the growth of Tidewater, Va. and especially the City of Portsmouth, has, and will, in the future, produce ever increasing traffic problems whic3a will require the development of new and more adequate traffic arteries, and WHEREAS, the construction of a second Eli~abeth'River Tunnel will in itself develop new traffic ~n the area of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River to the end that in the opinion of said Chamber or'Commerce, a replacement of the now old and inadequate bridge across said Elizabeth River fromPort Norfolk to West Norfolk will be urgently needed within the nex~ five years; lt~W, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, thatlthe Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce heartily commends the actien taken by the governing bodies of the City of Portsmouth, the City of Norfolk and NOrfolk County requesting the Virginia Department of ~ighways to proceed promptly with the surveying and plan- ning for.the construction of an improved modern bridge on State Highway Route No. 654, a t or near the mouth of the Western Branch of the ~lizabeth River, to the end that the ever increasing vehicular traffic in this area be properly served with the resulting beneficial development and economic well-being of the whole community and its environs; FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted ~o the State Highway Commission, the Elizabeth River Tunnel Commission, the Board of Super- visors of Norfolk Conn~y and the Councils of the Cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk respectively."
