"In. reference to.yours of Sept. 3Otb, inclosing copy of fetter from the Hedges Manor
Civic League, we are makingtemporary adjustments in our schedules mto provide one hour service instead of the
present two hour~service during the day time period, Monday through Saturday, Effective on Monday, Oct. 10,1960,
and Oc't. 8, 1960 for Saturday. This adjusr~nent will be on a trialbasis dependent en the amount of patronage,
since we must make every feasible economy and we can not provide service if the riding does not justify. Our
riding-checks do not indicate sufficient_.riding to require an, adjustment in the night service. (Signed, R.A.
Plant, Supt. of Trans.)

"On Sept. 30, you sent us a copy Of letter from the Sunray Farmers' Assn., regarding
transportation for certain school children. The Community Bus Co. has the right.to transport these school
children as'well as ~any one else from the County to within theCity and vice versa, however, apparently the
afternoon transportation does Rot fit inwith their regular, schedule, gere ~in tile City we operate extra service
to meet these needs. I am sure you are quite familiar with the rest of the matters mentioned in the Sunray Assn-
clarion letter. (Signed R A Plant, Supt~ of Trans.")

"We wish to reply to your letter of Sept. 30, requesting our thoughts to the suggestion
by the Harry Hunt PTA that.our buses be marked with signs, beth ;rent and rear, indicating that they are school
buses end.that the law apply to them the same as to County school buses. As you know, our Company operates a
City transit system. It would, therefore, be impragtical for our buses to he designated school buses for use only
by school children and school personnel. The State Code and the regulations of the Sta~e Dept. of Education, perT
taining to school buses, are very specific in their school bus requirements which do no~ have any practical ap -
plication to buses operating in .regular city service.
,We are therefore veryso~ry:that the Suggestion is impractical for buses opg~ating in
an integrated urban ~ransit system. We are very much interested, however, in the ~coutinued safe transportation cf
school children and always Melcome suggestions from our patrons. In this .connection you will be interestedto
know that the Portsmouth Transit Co. has a safety record, in the transportation of school children, second to
none in the country. We hope this letter g~ves you the information desired. (Signed Henry L Miller, Mgr.'?)

"As Mr. Plant and I outlined in youN office oa:~ Wednesday afternoon, we now have ordered
decalcomanias to place on the left rear corner of all of our buses, reading ?'CAUTION - Watch_for School Children"
tn the. meantime, since it will be approximately three wee.ks before these decals are received, we are now placing
~emporarily. on .the,Icl% side of the bus rear bumpers a s~gn reading: "Schools Open- Drive carefully" We are
glad to take this action in the.interest of school children's safety. Sig~ed Henry L Miller, Manager."
Motion of Mr. Weiseman to receive the letiers as information was adopted, without dis -
