let Portsmouth people get downtown and to work at. least as easy as ~ou are making it for them to get to
Norfolk.
"Selfish interest2'~ Of .course I have a selfish'interest, and it is.more than
just wanting a quick way home. I own property in Portsmouth, and I want-it's value ~o-increase. I want to do
business in Portsmouth~with.Portsmonth people, don't you?"
61~101 -The following communication from West Side Civic League was read:

"By action of this League, City Council is respectfully requested to investi-
gate the feasibilityof' making Airline Turnpike four lanes, from Alexander's Corner 'to Sixth Avenue at.this
time.
This section ~f highway has had no improvement of any consequence for over
twenty years. The roadway is deplorable and is in worse condition~ than~ uny thoroughfare in the City.
By making the Airline Turnpike four lanes with curbs, gutters and sidewalks
it will eliminate a large Ritch in front~of_~the'WindS~ Homes Apartments~-and provide a sidewalk for the school
children attending the I. C. Norcom~%gh School and Clarke Jr,_ High facing this highway.
There is now a ~emporary sidewalk on the north side of the highway, which has
improved the condition somewhat, .except in rainy weather, then thechildren walk on the edge of the highway
making it very unsafe.
Airline Turnpike is used as a main artery to the ddwntown section of the city
from the~estern par~ of the city.
City Manager Johnson stated to our committee over a year ago that he would like
to see Airline Turnpike made four lanesat ~he same ~im~.the section of highway from Alexander's Corner to
Hedges Ferry bridge is widened.
Recently President Kennedy requested cities and states to participate in a road
building program, etc., wh%ch would provide jobs for the nnemployed and strengthen the economy of the cities
and the nation.
The opinion of this League is that~it would be far better to use Federal funds
for roads, which are not -as controversial as other Federal funds."
before, some years ago, this same street was changed from Virginia Avenue to Greeatw~ Drive. This was
