62-244 - The fQllowing communication from the West Side ~ivic League was read:

Inasmuch as the President of the City Council made the following statement recently in a
news item which appeared in the Ledger-Star, we are addressing this letier to the ehtire Council.
'City Council may be ~orced 'to ~ise the tax rate on real estate from $2.50 per $100.
assessed valuation to $2.75, Mayor R. Irvine Smith said today.
Smi~hr said that the City is 0~ the verge of serious trouble with Eespect to revenue and
that some means must be found to broaden Portsmouth's revenue base if the City is to keep pace with increasing
demands for services.'
The members of this league would appreciate a clarification as to what demands for
increased services the Mayor had reference to, which would make it necessary for a general increase in real
estate taxes.
A general increase in real estate taxes,~is a matter of deep concern to all property owners.
(Signed: Louis H. Keller, Corresponding Secretary.)"

On motion of Mr. Atkinson, the letter was received as information and referred to the next
