President, was read:

the Woman's Democratic Club met on Monday, October 8th and during the business session,
the members voted unanimously to request that City Council approve the proposal of the Downtown Merchants
Association to bring the U.S.S Missouri to the City of Portsmouth.
Our members believe this ship to be of such historic significance that its presence here
as a tourist attraction would lend greatly toward the much needed, and planned for, revitalization of the downtown
bu~ness district. We also think this project, if accepted, would prove a worthwhile revenue producing endeavor
for our city.
We trust you gentlemen will give your wholehearted cooperation to this matter."
62-253 - The following communication from the Business and Professional Women's Club of

Portsmouth was read:

"On September 25~ 1962, at a regular monthly meeting of our organization, the Portsmouth
Business and Professional Women's Club voted unanimously to call fo your attention a matter which is of vital
concern to us, and one which we believe concerns every responsible civic minded woman in the city.
There exists in Portsmouth a glaring absence of women on policy-making boards and
commissions. In recent ~onths it has been noted that appointments have been made to the School Board, the Planning
Commission, the Redevelopment and Housing Authority~ the Recreation Advisory Board, etc., and in no instance, to
our knowledge, has a woman even been considered for the post.
We, therefore, request that you gentlemen in the future give equal consideration to
qualified women when policy-making appointments are to be made.
We will appreciate your cooperation in this important matter.
Signed: Mrs. Josephine B. Wilkinson, President; Mrs. Lucille A. Collins, Corresponding
Secretary.
