<br /> 65-166 - The following ordinance, approved on first reading at last meeting,

<br />OF TAPE RECORDERS AT M~ETINGS OF THE COUNCIL"

<br />On motion of Mr. Leafy, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote:

<br />Nays: None
<br />
<br /> 65-144 - The following ordinance, on which action ~cas deferred at last meeting,

<br />On motion of Mr. Johnson, the ordinance was approved on'first reading, without

<br />
<br />65-181 - The following letter from Louis E. Turner, 127 Oregon Avenue was read:
<br />
<br /> "I would like to recommend Mr. M. L. Staples, 505 Dominion Road to
<br />serve on the Portsmouth School Board.
<br /> Mr. Staples is Personel Director o~ U.S. Gypsum Company in their
<br />Tidewater Plant. He is a college graduate, is forty years of a~e and has a chil~ in Hodges Manor School.
<br />I believe he would make an excellent member of the board.
<br /> I would appreciate your consideration in this matter. I, myself,
<br />am a qualified voter in the City of Portmmouth and am very much concerned about our local school system."
<br />
<br />On motion of Mr. Barnes, referred to a conference of Council.
<br />
<br /> 65-182 - The following letter from the Rollingwood Civic Club, Clorine D. Coa~es,
<br />Secretary, was read:
<br />
<br /> "Our club would like to recommend Mr. Clea~us H. Hobbs, Sr. for appointment
<br />to the Portsmouth Recreational Advisory Board. Mr. Hobbs has been a resident in Rollingwood for the
<br />past ten years, is past president of our club and is currently serving his third term as vice president.
<br />He is thirty eight years old and the father of two children.
<br /> Mr. Hobbs is vitally interested in the recreational program of this
<br />city. He has been active in the promotion of organized athletics as evidenced by his latest accomplishments
<br />listed below:
<br />
<br /> 1. He served as manager for the Olive Branch Little League for three
<br />years, one year of which his team advance to ~he state finals.
<br /> 2. He was instrumental in the fox, nation of the Portsmouth Pony League
<br />and served as its president for two years.
<br /> S. He was one of those who made contacts which resulted in the re$ival
<br />of ;umerican Legion baseball in the city of Portsmouth.
<br /> 4. .He coached Jr., Sr., and adult basketball teams in the city of Portsmouth
<br />for four years.
<br /> 5. He was associated with Portsmouth's participation in invitational
<br />basketball tournaments for the past six years.
<br /> 6. He is a former member of the Portsmouth Umpire Association and
<br />also served as umpire for several years without remuneration.
<br /> 7. He is an active participant in league bowling.
<br /> Mr. Hobbs is well versed in recreational requirements and problems.
<br />He is interested in children and their development. We are confident that Mr. Hobbs will, if appointed,
<br />serve the entire city effectively and efficiently as a member of the Recreational Advisory Board for
<br />the city of Portsmouth."

<br />On motion of Mr. Johnson, referred to a conference of Council.

<br /> 65-185 - THe following letter from the City Treasurer, Annie E. Perkins, was
<br />read, and on motion of Mr. Barnes, received as information:
<br />
<br /> "Herewith is a list of delinquent Personal Property Taxes for the
<br />year 1964 to be furnished you as required by the City Ordinance."
<br />
<br /> 65-184 - A request from Mrs. C. E, McFalI, Jr., 5823 Turnpike Road for reimbursement
<br />for chickens killed by strayed dogs, the total amount being $9.00, was presented.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes to approve the payment of $9.00 to Mrs. McFal], was approved,
<br />without dissenting vote.
<br />
<br /> 65-185 - The following letter from George W. Price, Jr., Executive Director,
<br />Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority, was read:
