if <br /> <br />May 23~ 1967 <br /> <br /> 67-149 - "I submit the attached ordinance and recormnend it be placed on first reading. <br /> This ordinance closes a portion of Columbia Street between a line 180 feet east <br />of the eastern right-of-way line of Loudon Avenue and a line 272 feet east of the eastern righ%-6f~way <br />line of Loudon Avemue. <br /> Viewers were appointed .at the last meeting of the Council for the closing of this portion <br />of Columbia Street and their report is ~ttached, hereto." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Barnes, the following ordinance was approved on first reading, without dissenting <br />vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO CLOSE A PORTION OF COLUMBIA STREET" <br /> <br />-UNFINISHED BUSINESS- <br /> <br /> 67-130 - The following ordinance, approved on first reading at last meeting, was taken up and <br />read: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $8,700~0 FROM FHE GENERAL CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT .FUND FOR THE <br />PURCHASE-OF A PART OF.LOT 48, SEABO~ENUE, LOTS 207 AND 209, PINNERS AVENUE IN PINNERS <br />POINT" <br /> <br />On motion of blr. King, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Smith, Barnes, Johnson, King, Knight, Leafy <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 67-107 - On motion of ~ir. Knight, the matter of electing members to the Museum Board, to fill <br />the vacancies caused by,the expiration of terms of ~r. Blachman, Mrs. Axson, Mrs. Heely, and Mr. <br />Kilgore, was referred to a conference. <br /> <br />-NEW BUSINESS- <br /> <br /> 67-150 - The following letter from the International Telemeter Corporation was read: <br /> "International Telemeter Corporation~ a wholly owned subsidiary of Gulf & Western <br />IndustMi-es, Inc., hereby applies for a Community Antenna Television {CATV) franchise for the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, International Telemeter proposes to erect a cable television system for distributing <br />additional television signals to subscribers in Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> International Telemeter Corporation maintains administrative and engineering headquarters <br />of over 10,000 square feet at 2000 Stoner Avenue, West Los Angeles, with supporting personnel <br />and equipment for every kind of closed circuit television operation. If more detailed information on our <br />company is needed, or if suggestions for drafting a franchise ordinance are desired, we will be <br />happy to cooperate in every way. <br /> International Telemeter CorporBt%on has been active in the field of Community Antenna <br />Television Systems since 1952. In that year the corporation, using equipment designed, developed <br />and constructed in its own laboratory, built the first large Commnnity Antenna Television system <br />in North America in Palm Springs, California. The CATV systems in which our company is active <br />now serve 85,000 subscribers in 17 cities. <br /> When granted this franchise, International Telemeter Cornoration will maintain an <br />office and service facility on site and will, whenever possible, employ-and train local residents to <br />operate and maintain the system." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Knight, referred to a conference. <br /> <br /> 67-151 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Coast Guard Museum was read: <br /> <br /> · "The Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Coast Guard Museum, Inc., requests <br />the City of Portsmouth to make arrangements for flood lighting both sides of the Lightship Museum <br />"Portsmouth." The Board feels that this would have two very distinct advantages: <br /> 1. It would show the name "Portsmouth" on the side of the ship at night so <br />that vessels on the Elizabeth River and persons both vehicular and pedestrian in Portsmouth, <br />Norfolk and on the tunnel bridge would be able to see the name which would not only advertise <br />the Museum, but would advertise the C~ty. ~ <br /> 2. It would be of great aid in protecting the Museum and the surrounding area from vandalism. <br />The Board is very concerned abeut%th~ possible damage to the Museum and its equipment by <br />vandalism.in'Fan area somewhat remote from regular~traff~ and public streets. <br /> We respectfully request favorable action ~n this regard." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Barnes, referred to a .conference. <br /> <br /> 67-152 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Coast Guard Museum, Inc., was read: <br /> "The Beard of Directors of the Portsmouth Coast Guard Museum, Inc., believes that there <br />may well be Federal funds available which could be used for the ex?ansion and development of the <br />unique Likhtship Museum "Portsmouth" inc'luding the replica of the Hog Island structure which will <br />hold the first order lens now on hand in a City building. <br /> If such funds are available, we request that the City move as rapidly as possible in <br />order to obtain such funds for this purpose. The Board welcomes Suggestions as to any way that <br />the Board or its members can assist in making the obtaining of such funds more easily accomplished." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Knight that the matter be referred to t~e City Manager to exmlore the <br />possibilities of securing Federal funds, as suggested, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> <br />
