Hanson appointed to fill a three-year term ending April 30, 2001, <br />replacing Alan G. Coker. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Griffin, and seconded by Mr. Benn, to close the <br />nominations, and there being no further nominations, the above appointment <br />was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Griffin, and seconded by Mr. Robinett, to consider City <br />Council assignments to the following areas in terms of Vision 2005, and were <br />adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />Downtown - Councilman Robinett <br />Effingham Street Corridor. Councilman Moody <br />Steering Commission Chairman - Vice Mayor Griffin <br /> <br />98-221 Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Benn, and seconded by Mr. Robinett, that a resolution be <br />adopted bY the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, confirming the <br />existence of a local emergency as a result of Hurricane Bonnie and ratifying <br />the City Manager's Declaration of Local Emergency dated August 25, 1998, and <br />was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br /> "RESOLUTION CONFIRMING THE CITY MANAGER'S DECLARATION OF <br />THE EXISTENCE OF A LOCAL EMERGENCY. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in response to the threatened peril to the lives, safety, and <br />property of the residents of the City of Portsmouth as a result of Hurricane <br />Bonnie, the City Manager, in his capacity as the director of emergency <br />services, declared the existence of a local emergency on August 25, 1998; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, state law requires that such a declaration be confirmed by <br />the City Council. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby confirms the existence of a local <br />emergency as a result of Hurricane Bonnie and ratifies the City Manager's <br />Declaration of Local Emergency dated August 25, 1998." <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Griffin, Moody, Pitts, Robinett, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> <br />
