Johnson, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Wilson was nominated a meJmber of tn%e gc~ooi Board, to fill the $[acancy created <br />By the resignation of Rev. H. Edward Whitaker, which term of 'office will ex,ire on June 30, 1971. <br /> <br /> 68-401 - The following request of the Portsmouth School Board for transfer of land, on which action <br />was deferred to this meeting, was taken up, and on motiom 9f Mr. Bastes, approved: <br /> <br /> "~he School Board respectfully requests that. She City Council transfer to the School Board the title <br />of the land on which the Diagnostic, Adjustive and Corrective Center for Learning is to be constructed. <br /> <br /> The attorney for the School Board has been requested to prepare the deed for the tr~msfer of this <br />property. This transfer must be effected before the application can be acted upon by :the State Board." <br /> <br />- ~W BUSINESS - <br /> <br /> 68-421 - Motion of Mr. Turner to gointo the election of members to the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity <br />Project was adopted. <br /> <br />Dr. Holley nominated Dr. Luther C. McRae and David Lindauer. <br /> <br />motion of Mr. Hastes, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken Dr. McRae and Mr. Lindauer were elected members of the STOP project~ without dissenting <br />vote. <br /> <br />68-422 - The following petition from residents in South Park Manor was read: <br /> <br /> '~e, the undersigned home owners and tax payers of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia do hereby ¥~lunt~xily~ <br />urgently and justly petition for removal of certain un-sightly wooden structures in the South Park Manor area, <br />bounded by the fine Olive Branch Elementary School, new and expensive homes on 5amper Road, [~mosa Road, as well <br />as many high quality ~ well cared for homes on Sunset Lane {all exposed to these hideous monstrosities)~ ~t <br />was hoped that ne~ construction during the past couple years would Have added substantially to property values <br />and further enhance the already natural beauty of this growing Community. <br /> <br /> The area of South Park M~nor is no longer a piece of farmland, and such structures as "Old Red Barns", <br />"Chicken Houses" and"Farm Machinery Storage Sheds", should immediately be condemned and removed; in addition <br /> to this, the owners of the few remaining lots should be required to immediately remove all old rusty broken- <br /> down "Farm Fences", rotted lumber and other un-sightly debris, ~hich constitutes a hazard to school children <br /> of the area. <br /> <br /> For reasons unknown, progress towa~i~ improvement and beautification of our proud City of Portsmouth <br />[especially this part of itt apparently has come to an abrupt halt, and looks as though it will remain a dis- <br />grace for s long time to come. Such conditions should n. ot be allowed to mar and keep property values at a low <br />level for the present and even lowe~ in the years mhead. <br /> <br /> <br />
