On motion of Mr. Johnson, ~ominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken Mr. Stublen was elected a member of the Minimum Housing Board, for the term specified. <br /> <br /> 69-19 - Motion of Mr. Bastes to go into the election of members to the Board of Adjustments and Appeals <br /> was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Smith nominated B. Saundere Early and 61erm Yates to succeed themselves on the Board for a term of <br /> three years, expiring September 1, 1971. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. King, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Early and Mr. Yates were elected members of the Board of Adjustments and Appeals <br /> for the terms specified. <br /> <br /> 69-19 - Motion of Mr. Smith to go intothe election of a member tO the Supplemental Retirement Board, <br /> to fill the ~acancy created by the resignation of E. W. Lawrence, was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Bastes nominated R. F. Wood, III. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr~ Johnson, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Wood was elected to the Supplemental Retirement Board, the term expiring <br /> September $0, 1972. <br /> <br /> 69-19 - Motion of Mr. King to go into the election of three members to the Community College Board <br /> was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ming nominated the following: <br /> <br /> George K. Eberwine, Jr., 900 Sterling Point Drive - one year <br /> Dr. Harvey N. Johnson, Sr., 1529 Effingham Street - two years <br /> Dr. M. E. Alford, Supterintendent of Schools - three years <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Turner to close nominations was adopted. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Eberwine, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Alford were elected members of the Community College <br /> Board to represent Portsmouth, for therterms specified. <br /> <br /> 69-20 - Rental of Lawrence Stadium to the Tidewater Community Baseball Corp. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Bastes that the Council authorize the City Manager to make a new lease for $25,000.00 for <br /> one year on the same terms as the present lease, with the Tidewater Baseball Corporation, was adopted with <br /> one abstaining vote - Mr. Smith. <br /> <br /> The following letter fram Louis Turner, 127 Oregon Avenue was read: <br /> <br /> "I would like permission to appear before the Council Tuesday, January 28th, for the purpose of <br />~iscussing lease of the Portsmouth Stadium to the Tidewater Professional Sports, Inc." <br /> <br /> Mr. Turner spoke regarding the lease. <br /> <br />- N~ BUSINESS - <br /> <br /> 69-32 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce ~as read: <br /> <br /> "At a meeting of the Education Committee of the Portsmouth Cb. amber of Commerce Tuesday, November 19, 1968, <br />the sub-committee on Instruction and Vocation made nine (9} recommendations to help remedy our lack of vocation- <br />ally. trained people in this area. They mere as follows: <br /> <br /> i..Tha~ siudents, especially boys, should he exposed to at .least three [3)semesters of thz~e ($~ differ- <br /> ent types of' shop training; one (1~ semester in each year starting afl ~he 7th grade level and completed <br /> by the end of the 10th.years. <br /> <br /> .2. The preapprenticeship training program should be expanded to0ther fields as a direct source of skill <br /> ~abor into industry. It is possible at this time that industry would help develop this program. <br /> <br />3. That a program be set up at the llth grade level that will offer the student three {$) avenues of <br /> achievement. <br /> <br /> 4. That journeymen, who are ready, ~illing and able, act as bench and machine instructors. These journey- <br /> men have a w~allth of knowledge and slills that cannot be found in or transferred by text hoo~s. It is <br />further recommended that the present requirement ~hereby an individual of this type must pick up a required <br />number of college credits within an Education Curriculum within a stipulated period of time if he is to be <br />allowed to act as an instructor be eliminated, i <br /> <br />S. That system of incentives for the student be incorporated into the Vocational education Program that <br /> would motivate the student into and while he is in the program. <br /> <br />6. Guidance Counselors and teachers be exposed, in small groups, to numerous field trips into industry. <br /> <br />7. /i~at a presentation bom ado to all local P.T.A. groups as to the advantages of Vocational Education <br /> and what it would m~n to their children. <br /> <br /> <br />
