geutemhet .~0. 1969 <br /> <br />- UNFINISHED BUSINESS <br /> <br />69-275 - The following ordinance, approved on first reading at last meeting was taken up and read: <br /> <br />";aN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $76,500.00 FROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL I}.~ROVEb~ENT FUND FOR <br />THE PURCHASE OF MOBILE CLASSROOm, S FOR %dE :$~{00L BOARD." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Smith, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes: Barnes, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Turner <br /> Nays: None <br /> <br />69-274 - The following ordinance, approved on first reading at last meeting, was taken up and read: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $4~000.00 FROM THE GENERAL FUND FOR THE PURCHASE OF <br />PARKING M~TERS." <br /> <br />On motion of ~r. Turner, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes: Barnes, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Turner <br /> Nays: None <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS - <br /> <br />69-501 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Area Council of Garden Clubs was read: <br /> <br /> "The members of the Portsmouth area Council of Garden Clubs believe that the 1846 Court House in <br />Portsmouth is an important stmucture in the history of our city, <br /> <br /> .Our members are very much in favor of preserving and restoring the building and the site as tangible <br />evidence of an important and impressive past and for future use as a ~seum and Fine Arts Center." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Johnson referred to the file on similar correspondence. <br /> <br /> 69-302 . The following communication from Anna and John Dashiell was read, and on motion of b~r. Holley <br />referred to the City ~anager for study: <br /> <br />"To those we'd like to be concerned: <br /> <br />'We've been to see you at Council Meeting - <br /> We've called you on the phone. <br /> Nothing worked to help with our plight, <br /> So we decided to appeal with a poem. <br /> <br />And every other week or so <br /> The firemen come achurning - . <br />Cause dark black smoke billows forth <br /> The dump again is burning~ <br /> <br />Across the creek from our front yard <br /> Is a place where the city dumps. <br />And such a sight you've never seen <br /> It gives even our dogthe jumps. <br /> <br />Often we' hear shots from over there <br /> In the wee small hours of the morning, <br />And to think they maybe shooting rats <br /> Is really most alarming.. <br /> <br />Trucks come in the morning and afternoon <br /> And even in the middle of the night, <br />And we're sure what they're doing over there <br /> Just someh~ isn't .Right. <br /> <br />We often think how you gentlemen would feel <br /> If this were 'cross the street from you, <br />With your wives nagging you every day, <br /> Wouldn't there be something you'd do? <br /> <br />~Cause they dump the weirdest things-- <br /> Like concrete slabs and kitchen sinks, <br />And to put it a bit vulgarly, <br /> Everything they dtunp Stinks. <br /> <br />Now, we're not asking that you do ve~/ much <br /> A simple thing will clear the air. <br />Take some money from our taxes, <br /> Dtnmp some dirt and PLANT GRASS SEED over there. <br /> <br />You don't even have to plant it on top. <br /> If you'll just cover up the banks, <br />All the folks around these parts <br /> Willgive you their undying thanks.' <br /> <br />Please:-~ <br /> <br />69-503 - The following letter from Mrs. Sadie Copeland, 1411 Highland Avenue was read: <br /> <br /> "I, ~4rs. Sadie Copeland, would like to be put on your agenda fOr the next City Council meeting that <br />will be held on September 50th, 1969. <br /> <br />would like to put before City Council this question: <br /> <br />Is it possible to set up welfare payments on every two week basis?" <br /> <br />Mrs. Copeland spoke relative to her request. <br /> <br />The 6ity Manager stated that no cities in the State:pay more often than once a month. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr; Turner that the City Manager look into the matter and report further to the Council, was <br />adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> <br />
