geutemhet .~0. 1969 - UNFINISHED BUSINESS 69-275 - The following ordinance, approved on first reading at last meeting was taken up and read: ";aN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $76,500.00 FROM THE GENERAL CAPITAL I}.~ROVEb~ENT FUND FOR THE PURCHASE OF MOBILE CLASSROOm, S FOR %dE :$~{00L BOARD." On motion of Mr. Smith, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote: Ayes: Barnes, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Turner Nays: None 69-274 - The following ordinance, approved on first reading at last meeting, was taken up and read: "AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $4~000.00 FROM THE GENERAL FUND FOR THE PURCHASE OF PARKING M~TERS." On motion of ~r. Turner, the ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote: Ayes: Barnes, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Turner Nays: None NEW BUSINESS - 69-501 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Area Council of Garden Clubs was read: "The members of the Portsmouth area Council of Garden Clubs believe that the 1846 Court House in Portsmouth is an important stmucture in the history of our city, .Our members are very much in favor of preserving and restoring the building and the site as tangible evidence of an important and impressive past and for future use as a ~seum and Fine Arts Center." On motion of Mr. Johnson referred to the file on similar correspondence. 69-302 . The following communication from Anna and John Dashiell was read, and on motion of b~r. Holley referred to the City ~anager for study: "To those we'd like to be concerned: 'We've been to see you at Council Meeting - We've called you on the phone. Nothing worked to help with our plight, So we decided to appeal with a poem. And every other week or so The firemen come achurning - . Cause dark black smoke billows forth The dump again is burning~ Across the creek from our front yard Is a place where the city dumps. And such a sight you've never seen It gives even our dogthe jumps. Often we' hear shots from over there In the wee small hours of the morning, And to think they maybe shooting rats Is really most alarming.. Trucks come in the morning and afternoon And even in the middle of the night, And we're sure what they're doing over there Just someh~ isn't .Right. We often think how you gentlemen would feel If this were 'cross the street from you, With your wives nagging you every day, Wouldn't there be something you'd do? ~Cause they dump the weirdest things-- Like concrete slabs and kitchen sinks, And to put it a bit vulgarly, Everything they dtunp Stinks. Now, we're not asking that you do ve~/ much A simple thing will clear the air. Take some money from our taxes, Dtnmp some dirt and PLANT GRASS SEED over there. You don't even have to plant it on top. If you'll just cover up the banks, All the folks around these parts Willgive you their undying thanks.' Please:-~ 69-503 - The following letter from Mrs. Sadie Copeland, 1411 Highland Avenue was read: "I, ~4rs. Sadie Copeland, would like to be put on your agenda fOr the next City Council meeting that will be held on September 50th, 1969. would like to put before City Council this question: Is it possible to set up welfare payments on every two week basis?" Mrs. Copeland spoke relative to her request. The 6ity Manager stated that no cities in the State:pay more often than once a month. Motion of Mr; Turner that the City Manager look into the matter and report further to the Council, was adopted, without dissenting vote.
