<br /> Motion of Mr. Irvine Smith and seconded by Mr. King to receive as information, with a
<br />copy to be sent to the parties involved, was adopted, and by the following vote:

<br />utility lines situated within the area to be closed.

<br />This closes a portion of Barclay Avenue. The City has reserved a perpetual easement, right

<br /> "AN ORDINANCE TO CLOSE A PORTION OF BARCLAY AVENUE (FO~4ERLY ROSE AVENUE) FOR
<br /> A DISTANCE OF APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET WEST OF THE NORTHWEST INTERSECTION OF
<br /> BARCLAY AVENUE AND GEORGE WASHINGTON HIGHWAY."

<br /> 71-552 - "On MonSa~,~December 6, 1971, I received notice from the Portsmouth Gas
<br />Company that the following application has been filed with the State Corporation Commission
<br />for an increase in their rates for gas service in the City of Portsmouth. The State Corpora~
<br />tion Commission has set a hearing on this matter beginning at 10:00 a.m., January 7, 1972, in
<br />the courtroom of the State Corporation Commission in Richmond.
<br />
<br /> The increase requested will reflect a 15.5% across-the-board increase to all gas con-
<br />sumers. The Portsmouth Gas Company advises that this increase is needed immediately as
<br />major bond financing is necessary as soon as possible after January 1, 1972. This financing
<br />cannot be made on the rates as presently in effect. Also, increased operating costs have mad~
<br />this rate increase necessary."

<br /> Mr. Turner made a motion, seconded by Mr. Raymond Smith that the City Council go on
<br />record as opposing the ~a~e~; Further, when the legislative group goes to Richmond they
<br />be instructed to respond in accordance with the Council's attitude on this subject.
<br />
<br /> A substitute motion was made by Mr. Irvine Smith and
<br />following resolution be adopted in opposition to the rate
<br />the following vote:
<br />
<br />"RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE STATE CORPORATION CO~4ISSION TO
<br />INTERESTS OF PORTSMOUTH CONSUMERS WITH RESPECT TO THE RATE
<br />REQUESTED BY THE PORTSMOUTH GAS COMPANY.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Council
<br />who are gas consumers,
<br />received; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS,
<br />and has filed
<br />and
<br />
<br />is desirous of protecting the consumer interests of
<br />not only with respect to rates but with respect to
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, gas service is a necessity for the citizens,
<br />pal government in the City of Portsmouth; and
<br />
<br /> ~EREAS, the City does not wish to formally intervene
